2005 Jeep Liberty Towing

We have a 2005 Jeep Liberty Sport, 3.7 L V6 with 2WD. The factory tow package was not installed. We have a class III hitch we installed on our own. When we made the purchase, we did not need to tow anything, but we've been towing a 5 x 8 U-Haul trailer for about a year now. We're finally wanting to purchase our own trailer and began questioning our towing capacity. We've sent our VIN to Jeep and they state we shouldn't tow over 2000 pounds. We have used a 6 x 12 U-Haul trailer a couple of times with no problems, but not realizing we shouldn't tow over 2000. We called the dealership about it and were told to get the HD transmission cooler from a local place that does aftermarket work. We went there and were told we already had one that would be better than anything they could install. So, we've read a lot on here about towing and see opinions that it should be OK, just wish we knew for certain. We're looking at a 6 x 12 steel trailer that weighs around 2300 pounds. We've also found a 6 x 16 used trailer at a great deal that weighs around 2600 pounds. Our cargo isn't too much in weight, just volume. Our first long trip is in September - 16 hour drive from Texas to Ohio. Any opinions??? Looking for any insight. Thanks!
