I'm new, too. Just bought a 97 Cherokee 4.0L 3 weeks ago. Love it. You?

I got my 87 pioneer in July and I've been loving every minute of it.

I just picked up a 88 Laredo on Saturday. I'm just starting to research the build. I plan to hit the pavement with it when its too cold or I'm too lazy to ride my bicycle. I'd like to get off the path as well and hike/camp with it.

Re: XJ Cherokee
I'm not really sure what to do about the color. It might buff out to a half decent red but I think an army green would look good on it...

Army green is cool. I'm thinking about that chilli pepper red, though. Recently found out I have the Chrysler 8.25 rear differential. Trying to figure out if I want a locker or just an lsd. Its my daily driver, not really sure I wanna build it for crawling. But, man, that open diff sucks. Tired of spinning cuz of a little patch of ice or mud or whatever.

When you first get into Jeeps, if you don't have a mechanics background, you get slammed with all kinds of new stuff!

That's truth right there. Hell, I am a mechanic and there's stuff I never do. On a day to day I never crack open a diff, pull the guts, and install new gears. Honestly haven't done that since school.
