winches

so i am looking to buy my first winch. i wheel with a couple buddies and i am the only one wth a jeep and the only one that doesn't continuously get stuck they all wheel fullsize trucks. i have been looking into the warn M8000. my question is since they all have bigger trucks and are willing to chip in a lil bit on the winch should i go bigger. also how big is too big. if i go with a 12,000lb winch am i gonna rip my bumper off. or snap bolts. or bend someting. i would assume my wheels would start slipping across the ground before any of that happens but ya? any input?

8,000 to 9,500 lbs. is perfect for a Wrangler. You'll often drag yourself when winching bigger vehicles but a 9000 to 9500 lb. winch would be ideal for your situation. I'm running a 9500 lb. Warn winch and I've hauled several big trucks up hills/obstacles without much strain. Learning how properly to keep your Jeep from being pulled to the stuck heavier vehicle is key though. Personally I like my Jeep to be slightly over the top of the hill to prevent it from being dragged while winching if possible.

I have an M8000 and it has always pulled me out easily. It pulls the only fullsize truck in our club fairly well, It just strains a little when its extra stuck.
70's chevy on 39's. You could always use a pulley if you arn't getting enough power.

you can always tie off to another rig as an anchor or shift into 2 wheel drive wile hooked up and dig the rear tires in reverse..And remember if using a snatchblock make sure your anchor point on your jeep is strong enough to hold twice the load..

Please tell me that strap isn't really wrapped around the axle.

Ditto. 8000lb would be fine but the 9500 would not be overkill since your wheeling with some full size trucks.

Thats a disaster waiting to happen, something will snap in your driveline (probably transmission damage) by doing that at the same time you are pulling someone out with a winch. Reverse gears are not designed to act like brakes. Now if you dig a hole and then stop the wheels (i.e. foot on the brake) and start pulling with a winch, that would be fine. Anchor yourself to something or another vehicle.

i think 9500 lbs would be more than enough to pull out a full size truck. I pulled a guy out of ditch one time in an 03' GMC extended cab 4x4 he tried to go across the ditch and his front bumper was shoved up againt one bank and his rear bumper was against the other bank of the ditch and he had zero traction from his crappy tires. I had to strap up to an F250 to keep from sliding but the Mile Marker SI9500 did the job.

Get a pull-pal to go along with it. I pulled a Suburban that had it's front end sitting in the mud a few weeks ago. Without the pull-pal there's no way I would've kept from sliding - sometimes there just isn't a hill nearby.

Don't forget the snatch block either.
