winches
here is another one that i have heard mixed reviews about from my friends and thought i could get some other answers in here-- i am also looking to add a winch i just came accross a deal on some tires- so its a rubican lift and then a winch-- any ideas for what is a doable winch that is not over priced and to big for jeep--- i heard that 9,000 lb winch is a what i should go with- some say 12,000-- and if any one has had any trouble out of any brands- or know of any i should stay away from-- thanks

In my opinion 12,000 is overkill for most jeepers. I have the Warn M8000 it does the job for me but I don't do anything too extreme. The winch was pretty cheap, $688 including the Warn mounting plate.

I wouldn't go with the 12,000, seems like kind of overkill to me, I think a 9,000 would be plenty. I have a 6,000lb. warn that was given to me on my CJ, and it pulled out a Z71, prob. shouldn't have done that, but hey, it was free and I was willing to test it. But back to the subject, a 9k would be plenty especially if you have a snatch block. And I have heard good things about both Warn and Ramsey.

I prefer Warn. Ramsey's are about as good, though. If you're looking for a low-cost winch, go with Tabor (made by Warn) or MileMarker. Superwinch is out there, but personally I dont like em. You could find a 9000lb or so SuperWinch for little over $500 in Quadratec, but those Tabor's are about the same rating for the same money, just not heavy duty.
If you're gonna be a winch mule for your wheeling buddies, go for something heavy duty like a Warn or Ramsey (in most cases) If you only plan to use it rarely, go for MileMarker or Tabor. Quadratec's catalog has a great winch guide somewhere in there

Their higher end eletrics are also in the same category with Warn and Ramsey especially since Warn's started to use a lot of plastic and foreign parts... it's getting to where you have to carry spare solenoids just to use a Warn. ![]() |

There's a reason most people say Warn's are the best. I like my X8000i...got it for $650 shipped. If I had the cash for the 12K pounder, I would get it. Yes, even on a Jeep.
Most would probly say that 8K is enough though.

An 8,000 lbs winch is PLENTY. 9,000 lbs. is more than you need, except that some winches measure the capacity differently so that what one calls a 9,000 lbs. winch really won't pull any more than what another calls an 8,000 lbs. winch.
A 12,000 lbs. winch on anything but a full-size Jeep is just excess weight and a waste of money. |
