Wheel Paint is Peeling!

Hello, I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the paint is chipping off of the wheels. I am curious if I can repaint them myself (the dealership quoted $350).

My concern is that the factory paint was electrostatically applied (powder coated) and I would need a bead blaster and a lot of time to prep the wheels for painting.

It's happening on all 5 wheels, so would it be easier/cheaper to go buy new wheels? Thank you for your help.

You could clean them up and rattle can paint them. I know a lot of guys who have done so and you'd never know it. They look new. Or just drop them off at a shop and have them coat e'm.

As long as they are prepped right and you use a decent quality paint you'll be fine.

They wont need to be blasted in order to paint. Just remove any loose or flaking paint, then scuff the remaining paint to remove any gloss and give the paint a good tooth to stick to. Then you can use a "high build" primer to level out the layers where the previous paint is missing. Once you have things all leveled out then just spray them with whatever your paint of choice is.

And no clicky for ya ! welcome to the site !

I don't think I'd go to too much trouble for an old set of wheels. Scotch pad the surface and hit them with some rustoleum.

You might go to the car wash and blow off as much paint as possible before scuffing and painting

steel and rust

Hello, thank you for the replies.

I should probably mention that these are steel wheels and there is more rust on some of the other wheels not pictured. That means no matter what I put on them, they will continue to rust and chip.

I should probably just go buy alloy wheels.

I'm partial to powdercoating. you might want to look into it. & keep in mind the price they quote for you INCLUDES blasting off all the previous paint & surface rust. & don't know whether or not you want 'em chrome or not but powdercoat "chrome" is gettin better every year, but it still ain't quite chrome per se, but the blacks are beautiful!

Its a good excuse to get alloys if you want them, or...
