Echo that. The Ford with water pouring in the cab windows. The Toyota Tacoma standing vertical on its grill in a ditch. The Wrangler sunk to the frame in sugar sand. Oh... Wait... That last one was me.

The second thing is a winch.

I've seen a broken winch cable take a windshield out (driver was operating winch remotely, otheriwse injury wold have been severe) and another nearly take a guy's arm off, to the point he had to be airlifted out because of massive blood loss. On the other side, I've been there to jack an International Scout out of a basement with a Hi-Lift. A six hour process but we probably couldn't have done it with just a winch.

But as much of the choice depends on terrain. A jack won't move you in a Florida swamp. But if you have no anchor point within cable distance, a winch won't help either. And by far the worst thing I've had to do offroad (besides filter coffee through a sock...) was "winch" a Ford with a Hi-Lift. We had to move it about 60 feet, and I'd chip in for a commercial off-road tow to avoid doing that again.

Coffee thru a sock, that brings back memories of Scouts.

Let's see, 60 feet with a hi lift winch, divided by 4 feet per set up equals 15 sets with the jack times 5 minutes per set -- sounds like about an hour and a half of hard work in a Florida swamp! Bet you slept well that night.
