What's the diff?

I have what is probably a stupid question. What's the differance between a Dana44 and Dana44a? I keep reading that you can't do much with one as far as gears and lockers. Is this true? If so why not? Aren't all Dana44s the same? I wouldn't think that it would matter if the center section was aluminum or steel. Somebody please explain this to me.

The 44 and 44a are completely different. The 44a is a c-clip type axle and uses a crush sleeve. I don't believe that any parts interchange. I have no idea why they named the 44a after the famous 44.

I thought that all Dana44s used c clips. Since I don't wheel my ZJ other than to go hunting I don't really need lower gears, but would like to have a selectable locker. Is there anybody that makes a selectable for this rear end?

The aluminum housing Dana 44 used in ZJs/WJs is the 44a. It is the only Dana 44 to use c-clips. There are other aspects to it which make it weaker than the standard 44.
