Warn XD9000 vs 8724
Hi Guys,
I have found a couple of good deals on both of the above winches second hand, and the prices are within $50 of each other. Is there one of these or the other that would be a better buy, and if so why? Bye for now ![]()

Wow. Tough choice. For looks on a TJ I'd go the xd9000, from all I've heard, a very reliable, capable winch. For function, the 8724, but it's an ugly sucker IMHO. Probably not so ugly when it pulls your bacon out of the fire in the middle of nowhere, though.
I drive an old 75 trail jeep, so my personal choice is the 8724. I just wish I could afford such wonderment! Unfortunately for me, I had to settle for one of those winches made in a foreign land by child slave labor that will explode in a ball of flame, kill everyone within a 500 ft distance, and destroy the economy of the western world when I need it most. So either one of your options would make me a happy man.

XD9000 is much lighter
Hi crusty75,
Thanks for your input. I have just a good look through the specs on the Warn web site. It looks like I will probably go for the XD9000, because it is much lighter, so I it will weigh my Jeep down less. Warn states the XD9000 is 35 kg, and the 8724 is 50 kg! That's a lot of weight on the front of your Jeep! It will also block less of the radiator area. I would be keen on hearing anyone else's two cents worth as well. Bye for now ![]()

I don't think you can lose with either choice, but what are the ages of the two winches? They're both quality winches, but a motor upgrade of the 8274 will increase line speed (unless you're competing, winch speed is not vital but a nice feature).
From first hand experience, I have had no problems with the weight and the size of the 8274-50. Even before I installed an electric fan, I did not have any heating issues with the winch in front - and that's with hot, humid Ontario summers on the trail with the Jeep stationary! ...Plus the 8274 is just mean-looking.

got both winches sitting in the garage- xd9000 on a ZJ, and 8274 on a Tahoe.....i perfer the 8274, more line, imo stronger than the xd9000 especially when a heavy load is applied. Most of the weight is from the extra line, that can be remedied with syn line....if i could, i would have the 8274 on the ZJ

8274 will need a different mount than a XD9000 so remember that if you get it. Pretty sure the 8274 mounts to a vertical plane, and most winches mount to the floor. I would get a 8274 if I had that much money to spend.
