Warn Winches WTF....
Heres the deal, I recently installed a Warn XD9000i on my jeep. I have only used it 3 times, and never came closed to maxing it out or anything just pulling vehicles out of a creekand once pulling someone up a muddy hill. Worked perfect like a $900 winch should.
Now today after pulling people out of a creek Friday, I went to respool the cable, the stupid winch just clicks, like a bad solinoid? It will spool out, but wont pull back in. My buddies Warn winch does the same thing. I have to hit the solinoid box and it worked once and I got about 30 more feet to go and it will not work no matter what I do. Are all warns like this? Im sure some of you guys have alot more experience than I do with these things, for only having it for like 3 weeks.

No, darned few Warns have problems. Like anything new, even a Warn winch can have a problem... which will be fixed free under warranty. My Warn winch is 8-9 years old (which is not old by winch standards) and it continues to work just fine even though my Jeep was parked outside in all kinds of weather for years.

Well I went and investigated further, I found the copper terminal that holds the power cable to the solinoid was sheered. Looks like it was over tightened from the factory. This was the first time I had the cover off. I took the power cable to the other side that is connected to the same terminal and it still does the same thing. It will power out no problems, but just clicks to power back in. Thats what didnt make any sense to me. Could it be solonoids?
Jerry, you seem to be the resident expert on these problems. What do you think the problem is?

its a bad solenoid. I had the same thing happen with my M8000 a while back. I forget the procedure now, but do a search and you should be able to find out how to test them. Solenoids arent exspensive. I got a new one from ORW for like 20 bucks as I recall.

What would you like to hear? I've hesitated to post as many have heard my useless words many times before, but here we go again-Warn stands behind their products, 'nuff said. In all actuallity, I've run nearly every size of over the counter type winch Warn sells over the years, from the smallest ATV winch, up too the larger 12,000 lbs. truck winches. What I've not had the opportunity to use yet are the newer fancy style Mosfet or TI series, or the great big guns of the 16,000 lbs. they have out now. Over the years, I've only had a few encounters with Warn's customer service/Technical support and each time has been outstanding. The best example I can give is an old 8000 model similar too the XD9000i unit if I recall correctly. The winch itself must have been 8-10 years old, was in pretty sad shape-basically been rode hard, put away wet-rusty and abused. It quit one day, so a quick call to Warn and a recommendation to send it in for analysis to determine whether repair or replacement was in order. A couple weeks later, I received a brand new winch via the boys in brown, direct from Warn. Apparhently something had gone wrong inside that they felt was a manufacturing problem, and rather than fix it, they sent me a new winch. If that ain't excellent customer service, I don't know what is. I used to manage a Farm supply store, where we sold various other winchs and winch products from manufacturers such as Ramsey, Milemarker, Superwinch, Megawinch and Warn. After a year or so, Warn was the only one that remained. Why? Because of their customer service. Warn builds a great product, that is true, but when you get right down to the details, everybody makes mistakes and sometimes, products slip between the cracks through the Quality Control department. The difference is that Warn realizes this, stands behind their product, and ensures the Customer is happy in the end. This is not true with other manufacturers and for these reasons and especially my own experiences with Warn directly, I personally will not recommend anyone look at anything other than a Warn if they are in the market for a good winch. So, has the original poster called Warn yet to see what's up??? Off my soap box now, Best of Luck, Mike |

warranty? i want my $$ back, haha. I bought my 8274 USED in 1981 and its still in hard service-- winching fools out of the mud and off snow drifts. Best darn $ ever spent. My quads sport warns as well as my DD-- never a let down. Anyway, get that thing repaired and get out on the dirt!

Ok , I talked to Ron at Warn Tech Service. They are gonna send me 2 new soloniods. He says there are 2 solonoids that power in and 2 that power out. He seems to think one of the ones that power in is bad. Thanks for the help.
