Warn 9000 winch, the clutch lever wont go into its engage position, Its very tight and forcing it feels like the wrong thing to do, I can see how to pop it of but before i do this is there something else i should be doing???? cheers, adz

I had the same problem with my Warn Tabor 9K. The gear housing was packed with dirt (and original grease). I had to disassemble the gears, get a new handle from Warn (old one snapped off when I tryed to force it to engage).

I used online instructions for rebuilding a warn m8000 winch. (schematic drawing of your winch is available from Warn)

Cross reference the diagram of your specific winch and the online instructions.

Don' forget to order gaskets (several for thickness) for reassemnbling the gear housing after you clean it up and repack grease
