Warn winch install....Problem..need help.

Hello,

I just finished the install of a Warn M8000 on my 97 TJ. When I connect the remote and try to spool in or out the solenoid just clicks and the drum doesn't move. I've double checked the connections and made sure the lever is not in freespool. Any ideas would be very helpfull. This is my first winch.

Thank you,
Bill

Loosen the bolts that hold the winch onto the mount, and then try it. maybe the winch is bound up a bit.

Or you could always take it back, and get a Superwinch.

It actually spooled out about a foot of cable then stopped. Sorry, should have put that in the first post.

If you free spool some line out and then engage it, does it go one way but not the other?

No. Doesn't go either way. The motor does not run, only the solenoid clicks.

Might check to make sure you have a good ground connection.

there's actually 4 solenoids inside the box that need to work in order to spool in either direction. you may have a loose connection inside the box cause one to fail so you still hear a click, but don't get power to the motor. open it up and check for loose wires.

Thanks for the help but the warn winch just went back to Quadratec and I left with a Superwinch Epi9.0 with Synthetic line. Screw warn, their tech support never bothered to get back to me! I know this winch cost a bit more but they were out of stock on the wire line version and I'm all about instant gratifacation!!

An Unsatisfied Warn owner
Now you are going to make Warn owners cry.

Not to bad mouth Warn but this proves that Warns are NOT 100% reliable even if it's brand new. Since it was brand new... There is NO reason to open up the winch to figure out what's wrong with it. It should be in working condition on the 1st try and the customer assitance should have helped you esp when you paid high dollars for it.

Here is my post about this subject.

Just another prime example that ALL winches are not 100% reliable even if they are High End products made in USA or China!
No matter if you pay for a High End winch thats $500 to $1,000+
or a low end winch thats $300 to $500 both of them can or will have a problem with it.

Two of my jeep buddies owns a Warn and one tried to use it for a pull and it "sparked up with a small cloud of smoke" and was useless for the pull. My 2nd friend with his Warn needed my help because, he could not assist on a pull. His Warn does not work also.

I'm sure its always an embarrassment when your winch does not work esp in the time of need. But, is more embarrassing when others praise their High End winches and has to be pulled out by a Low End winch or has to be pulled out with a strap.

The moral of this is ... High Ends or Low Ends Winchs that are make in China or USA are NOT 100% reliable.

Jerry...It's your opinion that you prefer USA made over China. And you have mentioned that many times but, the Facts are coming in about the Warns and the troubles that they are having with them. I am just stating & proving the facts that they do tend to Fail new or used and are NOT 100% reliable. I just want others to know that there are other great winches out there other than the Warns and to realize that ALL winches are not perfect but, can still do its job high end, low end, cheap or expensive ones.

I am not here to pin pont a certain winch for anyone to purchase but, to explain the facts about the Warns because, many put down the lower end winches & they do just as good or even better than the Warns.

So, Purchase what's best for your needs and budget and Happy Winching!

By the way... Nice Trade & Glad you are Happy with your new Winch!

I know But, Believe me... He Will be.
I know how he is when it comes to this subject.

I have nothing against Him but, I just like to show the facts about this.

Any subject about a Warn ...
He'll always talk about it being made in the USA and would tell others to stay away from the ones from China.

I'm a step ahead on this one

i belive IGotADisneyJeep is refering to me i have had two issues with my warn9.5 ti

first issue i broke it my fault i used it as a tow strap locking it up i called warn and they had me ship it out and they even fixed it for free i was none the less extremly pleased since it was my fault

second time my fault again after getting stuck in a nice muddy water hole i never bothered to check to see if any water got into the cap covering the connections well there was and my 12 volt lead ended up getting corroded and the female pin broke off simple fix for me my father had the tool and extra pins for me to replace it i was just lazy and took 6 months to fix it which is why i needed him to have him help us out

so what i'm saying here is no matter what winch u use keepin it matianed and using it properly is key to having it workin when you need it

and yes not getting any support from warn is extremly shady (i called them and worked over the phone with them) (maybe the dont work well through email's)(i dont know i've delt with companys that do 1 or the other well and don't even bother with the other)

Yup I was talking about my good friend yokevmo "Kevin" winch.

But, He's also right that if you want a good working winch that will last a long time you should take care of it.

Here is a copy of one of my post on how I take care of my winch.

I do test my winch every month so, it can work properly. I also grease all the parts and use Di Electric grease on the electrical parts so, It will not get rusted and keeps water from getting into it.

I use my winch for emergency usages & for major recoveries. When we offroad, We try to recover or aid our jeeps with recovery straps first. If that does not work then we'll use our winches. Using recovery straps first is quick and fast and helps the life on your winch. Try to save the life time on your winch and use a strap first. Many times you just need a small tug to recover a rig thats stuck and a recovery strap is easy and fast.

If you take care of your winch like I do...
Your winch will last & work for a long time.

Thanks for the support! Now I can't wait to try it out. I've never used synthetic line but so far it seems to be light years ahead of wire line.

You will be very pleased when ever you'll use your winch and your new syn. line. Your winch line is a lot safer than the cable wire line. Just remember think safety at ALL times when using your winch and make sure others are out of harms way. Again, Great choice on your newest purchase.
