trailer for off road

I am looking for a trailer to use for off roading and camping. (NOT to put my jeep on, but pull behind my jeep off road.)

There was a jeep on the jeep.com website in the video contest yesterday but gone today and I can not find it on any of the video sites they list.

It was a Military looking 4x6 size (maybe). with 2 ft sides. I am looking for some thing like this that i can put matching wheels and tires on as well as get very good ground clearance.

Open to idea's.

Could I do a spring over axle mod?

Looking at these, I wonder if I wouldn't have to totally chage the axle to get two matching tires and wheels (as emergancy extras and cool looking rig).

Any thoughts?

Check out the offroad trailers at http://www.adventuretrailers.com/. I've seen them at several offroad shows and they are really nice and well built. I'd like one myself.

A friend of mine tows a trailer behind his YJ that's made from an old Ford Ranger bed. We were discussing trailers and he says I can get a little trailer made from a truck bed like his for a couple of hundred dollars. It's nothing fancy, but it works. I'll probably go this route myslef. It's certainly a lot cheaper than anything else I've found including roof racks, oversized spare carriers and racks, etc. I think that I'll use a pintle style coupler though. I think it'll provide me with better performance offroad, and will be harder to steal as fewer people will have the appropriate hook. I'll also be looking for one with a similar width as my TJ so I only have to cut one set of tracks in mud or snow. It also makes sense to have wheels and bolt patterns that match the tow vehicle. Does anyone know the capacity of these truck bed trailers? Any reason to not go for one of these little jobs besides the kind of homebuilt appearance?

Thanks,
Adam

M-416 or m-100 carries 1/2 ton should be all you need. oh well you may need to have a different means of attachment made for it. i believe most if not all are pinticula(sp?) hooks.

It's not too hard to modify and existing trailer like that. I'm in the process of doing just that. I need to update my thread in the fab shop with some new pictures. I've been slow to get work done over the holidays but I have more time now. Here's a quick pic. I'm going to lower it some as it's too high right now. I also need to change the hubs to get the right bolt pattern.

Are you serious. Yea, very nice. My WJ according to KBB is worth $8k about the same price as the nicely equiped adventure trailer.

I can buy two 4x4 atv's with trailer for that. That's more than the new Jasper Engine I just had installed.

I think I can custom manufacture one like that for under 1k. I know I can buy a M416 for 1k also.

What are those guys thinking

Did you build the trailer from scratch? or did you start with a base from someone else? I can buy all the scratch components from Tractor Supply, but i am worried about getting the base correcly mounted to the suspension and axle.

Plus, I need an axle with hubs that I can use with my matching WJ wheel bolt pattern.

Actually, I started with this... minus the posts. The axles that Tractor supply sells come with a 5 x 4.5 pattern that matches a Wrangler. I've been wanting to swap to that, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I need to post some more pics as it's painted black now and I've finished the rails.

i built one out of an old sears camper. gutted it and started w/ a tub. since all my rigs run 8 llug 35" wheels, i added H2 wheels, toyota springs (free) and went crazy with the tubing. Dual position hitch, for either the jeep or the chevy truck. this offers a number of position combinations. having a receiver on trailer tongue also lets one remove and lock it up-- lots more secure. the rear receiver is from a club member's new TJ (free) and the front brackets accept a hi-lift. Added two jerry can mounts as well. Not depicted are the new shocks, poly bump stops now in place and its fully painted. it has crazy clearance and is rubicon tested. so its not that hard to do it ur self-- just time, money and beer. the wifey wife made me cover up all but one of the girly sillouetes.

an earlier configuration, using a toyota rear end.

present form, less the girly symbols

We also have a Venturecraft pop-up

oops!

Then for the Polaris MV7, a nice dump trailer...

RareCJ8, the first trailer you posted is just exactly what I'd really want. I like a number of the things you've done, and having the pintle ring on the front is a great idea. What do you use the rear receiver for? How does the pintle and ring set up compare to a standard ball hitch on road and off? Do you just load up your camping gear and cover it with a tarp, or do you have some kind of trailer tonneau cover or lid?

Thanks,
Adam
