TJ on sand dunes - should I?

Hey all....I'm going to be going to Silver Lake in about a month and really want to get my TJ up on the dunes there. I'm worried though about the consequences of sand. I know this is a very loaded question but is there any preventative action I can take beforehand to limit my chances of something getting screwed up from sand?

I have a 97 TJ with 85,000 miles on it and it's my DD. Thanks for the heads up.

I grew up in Oscoda Michigan always wheeling in the sand hills on the powerlines and such around there. Never had a problem with anything. Michigan sand is not as fine and silty as the desert blow sand that gets in everything. Mudding is much worse on your U joints and bearings than Silver Lake will ever be.

Really?! Wow! I never would have thought that. I just replaced my front axle u-joints so i'm not too worried about those. I was more worried about sand getting in my axle shaft housings, transfer case, tranny, or something along those lines. After you get done wheeling on those dunes, are there any mandatory flushes/procedures you do?

I live about 20 minutes from silver lake and have been in the dunes since I was 2. Of all the vehicles we had up there all of them are still in perfect condition even after being abused by the sand dunes. The only worry you should have is going through the 6ft or deeper puddles around there. I have been restoring a cj since I got it when I was 14 (now 18) and this will be its first year up there. I know I have nothing to worry about and either should you. Just Dune It.

OK, sold! haha. Yup, i'm going to take it up there. I am not really planning on hitting any puddles simply because, if it's nice out, the top is going to be down. I am really looking forward to this.....my family has been going up there since we were little kids. We've always gone up there with my mom's cars but never in my Jeeps.

Random question......is termite bridge still standing?!

Here they are. There were more, but these are all I saved. The Jeep had a lot wrong with it. He bent both axles, air bags went off, two or three of the coil unseated themselves, and extensive body damage. I think there also might have been frame damage. It was brand new when he did it. The other pictures showed the owner underneath the Jeep working on it while it was lifted with a Hi-Lift that look ready to tip over. He also still had the stock spare.

Obviously I agree Just Dune It... I have been going to Silver Lake since about 92 all of my jeeps have been there. The only thing I would say is if you are trying to keep the sand out you might want to keep the top and doors on. I know, it's not the same but believe me the sand goes everywhere and is hard to get out of the carpet. If you don't care about the sand in side the cab = top and doors off. I stay away from the water, not only does the water/sand get in axles, drums, vent tubes, tub and seats yes I said seats some of the water holes get deep FAST. Drive safe and you'll have a blast....Just Dune It

I've heard of Termite Bridge where is it? I thought it was something to do with Mac Woods Dune Rides.

I've never seen a Jeep get that much air. I guess that kid did not get the Jeep "prerunner" packaga. I wonder how fast he was going when he hit that? Anyone know, 50 or 60 maybe?

I know that area, 90% of the people who wheel out there are pretty drunk, I sure hope he was one of them so the accident didnt seem to bad.
