Snorkel in the rain

Can you drive with a snorkel in the pouring rain?...I was thinking the water might get into the intake.

Yes you can, I have never heard of any problems yet of doing this.

Small amount of water is fine, you are getting water injection for free.

I have never had a problem with it. The intake tube sits up a little bit higher in the snorkel head so that the water can't run down the back of the head and into the intake tube. If that makes any sense.

I have driven through some heavy rain and checked my filter afterwards and it is still completly dry. The biggest problem I have seen is that bugs end up in squished into the filter

Since mine set a lot and we have some major down pours I made more of a cap for mine.

We had a ton of Rain this year and I have not had one problem or a drop of water on my filter.
To keep the bugs out I put a piece of screen over the mouth with silicone.

gets your intake up higher so if you do through deep water your engine can still breath and not suck in water... however...other things are required to water proof an engine, not just a snorkel.

It's surprising the number of snorkels people run with the intake facing forward. Don't kid yourself, you are not going to get a ram air effect by doing that, but you are going to get a lot more dust, debris and water in there than if it were turned rearwards.

As long as the intake is in a high pressure area you will get some ram air effect. However experience indicates that this is sometimes offset by the restriction of the added tube length of the snorkel (some people report good gains others see little to no difference, a few see a performance decrease after adding a snorkel).
Raising the intake seems to reduce the amount of grit etc. (compared to behind the grill intakes, (based on a check of the filter both ways)). I agree that minimum grit is inhaled by a rear facing intake.

Enjoy!

Personally, I believe that 99.99% of all snorkles installed on Jeeps are strictly for looks... though those with snorkles who are not in the .01% that actually have a need for them will certainly disagree and make all sorts of claims to the contrary.

I agree with that but I think this may be one of those .01% I don't think I would want to go through that without one.

Hey Mrsig I noticed that snorkel is right where the radio antenna is supposed to be. Did you relocate it? And if so, where did you move it too.

Oh, and what else is needed to water proof the engine in a JK?
...I'd love to be part of that .01%

I use the Sat mostly but I put it in the fender well and it works fine!
I put Dielectric grease on all my connections before I go out and play too.

Ah the great snorkle debate....About as good as auto vs manual trans.

After 2 Jeeps in my local club hydrolocked thier engines in the same month, (Destroying both engines) most of the core club members have snorkles now. We regularly ford the 'Bathtub' obstacle and Dry River (Its not dry and actually very deep in places) in George Washington National Forrest, and the water crossings at Oak Ridge. Club members have done water crossings at many other places. Pix avail upon request.

Anyway, for the original poster, here is the technical explination on why water is not ingested into an ARB Safari snorkle during a rainstorm. Quoted from the 4x4 connection ARB Snorkle FAQ page, available here:

http://www.4x4connection.com/tech/snorkeltech.htm

Q. Will rain go down the inside of a Safari Snorkle Ram?

A. Even in a tropical rainstorm, only a tiny volume of the impact moisture will enter the snorkel. The incoming rain droplets are broken up as they impact on the special, Safari designed, grill cross ribs. The high speed of the airstream as it turns the 90 degree corner in order to enter the Safari snorkel, causes the heavier rain droplets to move to the outside surfaces. Here the rain is collected in the expanded lower body of the Safari air ram, (outside the Safari Snorkle body) and allowed to drain out, via the slots provided.

Here is the pic on how it works. Pretty ingenious really.
