Is your bumper welded to the frame? Cut that silly tube out. It'll make your life easier.

pay no attention to the red and black cables... those were to test fit wiring... but do pay attention to the hideous color coded yellow and blue boots.... the control box mounts on top of the motor if you set it up as it comes out of the box..... and you woudl have a yellow wire and a blue wire goign to the motor from there..... yuck. i'd be buying new wire that was red and black if i was going that route for sure... eww that's ugly. haha
![]() yea the bumper is welded to the frame. i would have cut that tube out today but i have no way to do it other than an angle grinder with a cutting wheel. tomorrow i'll probably go up to the shop and plasma it out so i can actually get to the bolts ![]() only thing is i gussetted the winch plate/bumper top to the tube so it wouldn't peel... i could go about that another way though.... we'll see, haha ![]() -Erik <--- loves finding excuses to play with the plasma

I'm thinking about it...kinda torn between this one and that atlas 9500lb. the atlas is series wound, more hp, same gearing...made in china. more current draw. but i also have to wait for approval....the gf says when she gets a diamond ring, I can get a winch so...soon...on both counts ![]() |

That is incorrect an electric motor will work just fine completely submerged in water and when dried out it will also work just fine. I am a safety instructor and use a 3/8" drill to demonstrate ground fault current interrupting outlets. I turn the drill on lock it at full speed and lower it into a 5 gallon bucket of water. It will run all day long. There is no harm in doing it. The issue comes in completing the circuit from the motor to ground through your body such as holding the drill in your hand and standing in a puddle. It is amazing how many people, electrical engineers and electricians who think that the minute the drill hits the water it will quit working or blow the circuit breaker. In the situation described of a winch motor your connection will not occur you will be safely separated by the winch being in the water any ground will go to the steel of your vehicle if it is even a factor. I would not hesitate for a minute to use a submerged winch if it was what was needed to get out of a jam.

BnB YJ, I am not a welder so I was just going to order a winch mounting plate for $65.00 that is made for the yj do you think that will work or are the mounting plates junk? Well let me refraise that I can weld but instead of a cable braking it will probably rip my welded plate off

i have to say that it is completely possible to operate an electric winch while submerged.
I have done it with my rep 8000 on at least 7 separate occasions and have had no problems. the biggest problem is cleaning and re-lubing it after to make sure no silt or water contaminated the winch.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a winch plate. In fact, the A to Z Fabrication one if what I planned to buy originally... but then I got to thinking about it and I liked the look of a winch plate being built into the bumper and since i already made my bumper I wanted to do my best to keep it looking like a clean functional "winch" bumper... which is the only reason I didn't want a winch plate..... As ugly as they are, the harbor freight winch plates work great and they're cheap. something to keep in mind..... UPDATE: took better pictures of how i made the fairlead mount and with the iwnch installed. those last night were way too dark. ![]() ![]() -Erik <--- is doing some wiring today!

Nice, let us know if it's worth the money and functions well. I'm thinking about ordering one if you think it's a smart investment. Otherwise it will probably be the Warn M8000

UPDATE:
as for wiring today i got some 4 awg battery cable from the parts store and some connectors for the ends... i got some heat shrink tubing from lowes, and some 16-4 in-wall cl3 speaker cable from lowes to use to extend the remote plug that i put in my dash. i'm mounting the control box to the front of my battery tray, vertically. i moved the solenoid pack up higher in the box and had to drill new holes to do so obviously. i went to circuit city and bought stereo battery terminals for all my wires (new and old) but found that i wasn't thinking properly and they won't work b/c my wires are too big. best buy carries battery terminals for $15 that will handle two 4 awg wires and another for about the same price that will handle 2 4 awgs and 2 8 awgs.... tomorrow i'll get those and the install will be done! i'll post pictures after i get home from wheeling ![]() -Erik <--- probably won't need it, but it will be nice insurance

hehe, good call
![]() update: i unspooled and respooled the wire today and though its not the fastest thing in the world it didn't have any hiccups, bumps, or any farts along the way. the free spool / engaged knob worked fine, the forward reverse on the remote worked as it should, and the motor didn't really get all that warm. knowing that i only have one yellow top and a stock alternator i only ran it for 20 seconds at a time with a 20-30 second break in between sessions. no sense in being in a hurry and burning up a voltage regulator or overheating the somewhat sketchy permanent magnet motor...... i also got bored while changing my diff fluid and welded my front spider gears so i'm off to do some wheeling to see just how horrible my steering is... perhaps i'll get stuck while i'm out ![]()
