No taken it apart will not cause any problems, you just have to be careful as not to damage the magnets or the commutator, or brushes.. Just be careful putting it back together too, do not use a hammer or anything to try and tap the end cap back on as you can damage it and the bearings that are in the center of the cap..

Just a bit of advise..

There are several disadvantages through, those being mostly being high current during a stall condition and during instantaneous reversal. Those can damage some motors or be problematic to control circuitry. Furthermore, some magnet materials can be damaged when subjected to excessive heat and some loose field strength if the motor is disassembled.
Course, you can't believe everything you read on the net but here is where I found that info I referred to:

http://www.pc-control.co.uk/dc-motors.htm

Granted it's on a completely different scale, but I remember as a kid taking apart a lot of my little Tyco slot cars to remove pet hair .... and they never seems to run as well afterwards.... but then again, I was 8 so who knows WTF I did to em

The problem is where would it be best stickied if it was even important enough to stickie?

this certainly isn't the most appropriate forum for this thread.... I posted it here b/c you guys are like my extended family and I thought that if any tight wad members would be interested in a cheap winch it would be you guys

the Technical Articles & Write-Ups forum might be a better place for it... i was going to post it there to start with but I thought that you guys would benefit more seeing it in front of your face rather than searching... since it seems most people lack the knowledge of the search feature

update time:

that piece of magnet that appears missing in the picture... it is.... i just check out my full size pics and sure enough a chunk is missing out of that corner.... i thought perhaps i damaged it taking it apart but seeing as i did it on my white carpet and there is no magnet chunks anywhere to be found i suppose this was a factory defect.

i'm not goign to do anything about it now.... i'm going to install the winch as-is and test it out. if it works fine, and i assume it will, then i'll use it until my season of fun is over and then handle it via warranty. it'll be an easy 5 minute swap to install a new motor so no biggie here.

i'll email smittybilt in the meantime to make them aware of my problem and see how they plan to handle it. if they will just send me a new motor then i'll install it and keep this one as a spare.... we'll see

ok... i'm going to install this thing... updates to come tonight if i get to test it by then!

I'd say that could be a small problem

Anyone know if a Warn motor will bolt into either the Mile Marker or this Smitty unit?

Hmmm... well... you could just go with a hydro winch and be done with it.

Well even if you broke it the chunk won't fall out eh? It'll just stuck to the unbroken part in a corner somewhere, so rotate it by hand or something to make sure nothing is jamming.

Magnets are funny this way as if you were to break a peice off a magnet it work it would oppose it self from the rest of the magnet and bounce off or repel off and go flying.. It is the whole north and south thingy with magnets..
