those are what i use.................
hang a jacket on the cable/strap when using it so it can dampen the shock if it breaks, while pulling or winching (so nobody gets killed). youtube.com has some good vids, like the ones previously posted.

I unfortunately have a strap with the hooks on the end of it. I bought it years ago before I knew better. What do you think about cutting the hooks off and leaving the loops? They'd be small, but should be functional.

I bought my 30k military Suprplus strap off ebay (new) for $30 or so... I have another 20k strap that 4 Wheel Parts donated to our club as well. A good strap shouldn't cost a ton of cash.

IMHO I don't like the act of pulling people out backwards... but if you are going to that's not a terrible idea (as long as you have someone spotting the recovery properly so you know what's going on.

your gearing makes for more torque in reverse, so its a pretty good idea...

make sure the vehicle you're towing can handle it too!!

I would like to know why my club insist on using a shackle between the winch hook and tree saver. Why cant I hook the hook straight to the strap? Why to I want to add 4lb to the mix when I'm winching? Also why is when I'm jeeping people insist on having the scew shackle verses one with a quick pin, when every other job i've been on a quick pin one works just fine.

It sounds like it is two parts vs three parts if it is the same shackle I am thinking of.

What is the load rating of your chain?

good videos

Thanks for the links and the info....i'm sure more info is to come.

I'm not qualified to launch missiles and therefore didn't want to put any hooks into orbit. I'm glad I got this thread going and thanks for the info added

Just understand that choking a sling like that reduces the rating of the sling by about a third or a half vs. a straight line pull. If the sling is long enough, better to hook one loop to an attachment point on the recovery vehicle, run the sling around the bumper of the recovered vehicle, and back to the recovery vehicle with the other loop at a second attachment point.

Yes, but what about the strength of teeth on your diff gear set. They are cut with the view that they would be strongest when pulling in the forward direction (your normal direction of motion). I have seen diff gearing being destroyed while pulling in reverse direction.

A chain does have its use in recovery; however unlike a snatch strap, there is no elasticity (kinetic energy) to take advantage of within the linking device. I can see a chain working to anchor a feasible recovery/mounting point.

A chain may even extract the struck vehicle, however there should be NO JERKING OR SUDDEN pulls.

Yes, the chain can be tougher than the jeep - to the point of breaking an axle, recovery point or even your motor mounts. Caution is strongly encouraged!

Jeep safe, Jeep hard!
