If the second vehicle doesn't have shackles, you can just loop the strap around a good recovery point, then loop it through itself. Then pull the other end over to your vehicle with the shackles and get unstuck. No nots to untie.

I'd rather use a strap. A wide enough strap is darn near unbreakable as well. If you are going to take a running start to snatch a vehicle out it is hard to calculate the force on the chain / strap. Plus straps are meant to stretch to aid in those type recovery situations. The only time I will use a chain is if I'm just going to pull the vehicle without yanking.

If it does break I guarantee you would rather have a strap flying at you than a chain. During the recovery I also place a heavy moving blank over the middle of the straight to dampen it should it break.

while on the subject, where is a good place to pick up a recovery strap at a good price? all the ones I have seen have been the tow straps-metal ends.

Where do you carry 40ft of chain that strong and it must weigh more than 100lbs too.

Straps are lighter and easlier to store and carry. Plus, two straps can be easily joined at the loops w/ either a D ring or by linking the loops together directly (passing one strap through the other's loop then back through itsown loop).

Good recovery straps are not inexpensive.

Any strap has a loop on each end. Put the loop through the D rings on your rig... no need to tie anything.
Even a broken one?

i have a big ammo can in the back to carry my chain and yes it is heavy. i also put whatever is available over it to help with recoil should it snap.

i saw a guy on the beach one time in a big 70's boat car(lincoln or caddy, can't remember) pulling out a stuck truck by running two chains with an old tire in the middle. the car hauled off and when the chains got taught, the tire stretched out and the truck just popped out of the sand. looked funny as hell. i dont know if i'd try it, but it works.

besides the hundreds of online places, if you have a tractor supply store near you, they sell a few different straps. they got a super beefy one for like $98 rated at 80,000lbs braking strength or a little higher (been about 2 months)
