So my plans this summer include selling my 2wd XJ and buying something 4x4. But, it's not that simple. My dad and I are planning to fly out to Cali, pick up a Jeep, and cross-country it back home to Atlanta. I'm currently looking for YJs, XJs, TJs, MJs, ZJs, anything 4x4 and under a $6000 budget. Do you guys have any tips? Thoughts? What would you drive all the way across the United States?
Buy the Jeep you want to keep. Then even if it's miserable, you'll love it. I mean, an XJ or similar would probably be way more comfortable across country, but I'd rather rough it in my YJ. That's livin'!
I would buy an xj for a cross country trip. My YJ is my baby but if I had to go cross country in the summer time with someone else I would rather have something with a/c and a little more space.
sounds like a great bonding time! that will be a trip both of you will remember for a lifetime.
buying a used vehicle long distance is difficult at best. if it were me, I'd have a professional inspect the prospective jeep before hand. be ready to do some maintenance before leaving Cali, like oil change, belts & hoses, maybe a brake job, (hopefully not) tire replacement. I'd also buy a few hand tools, probably a lot cheaper than paying to fly them out, just to be a good boy scout.
My buddy and I are getting ready to take a 98 ZJ from TX to northern Canada (running the Dempster Highway) to Seattle and back to TX. It'll be almost a 10,000 mile trip.
3.5" IRO lift, 4.10 gears and 31" tires. 4.0/auto. These things look and run nice. If you're looking for a road-trip SUV, this would be my recommendation.
I would drive and actually have driven my TJ all the way across the US. Got a few 4500 mile and one 10,000 mile road trip under my belt with the soft top flapping and four squirrels humming for mile after mile after mile...
That said, I'll echo the advice to get the Jeep you'd like the most to keep. Oh, and if you happen to get one with a soft top, bring ear plugs.
