offroad trailers? anybody have one

i am interested in making an offroad trailer to pull behind my 02 tj. does anybody on this board have one or have information on where to buy or how to make? i love the tentrax but am not willing to pay 10k and i dont think the fiberglass body would stand up all that well against bumps and scrapes. i am thinking sheet-metal and square tubing. not too big but big enough to haul one 4-wheeler.

any pics would be helpful. i am searching for a couple of pics that i like to show what i am talking about.

i am hoping that the mods will leave this in the tj forum since that is what i plan on pulling it behind.

My suggestion would be to base it on the design of the Vietnam-era M416 1/4 ton Jeep trailer.

Do a search for "M416", and I'm sure you'll get plenty of hits.

Good little trailers.

Another suggestion, for offroad, use a pintle hook and lunette eye setup, and then use a ball hitch for the road. When you make the trailer, put a 2" receiver on the front so you can change the two out. I've seen it done, and it was a really cool way to have the best of both worlds.

I've looked into it for my flyfishing sports...

http://www.adventuretrailers.com/
http://www.backcountrytrailers.com/

were my personal fave's.

I then decided i didn't really want to spend a whole weekend with some of the sports...

The Bantam trailer was the first 1/4 ton trailer, mostly WWII era.
The M100 trailer was very similar, mostly Korean War era.
The M416 trailer was very similar, mostly Viet Nam era.
The Canadian M101 trailer is similar to all the above.

Most folks can't tell the difference in any of the above. There are group buys on Canadian trailers going on regular basis. 20 of them were recently shipped to Az, to Jeepers.

I have 2 PDF files I found on the web that describe, in detail, the M416 army trailer. One is the War Department Technical Bulletin with the specs on the "1/4 ton two wheel amphibian trailer" and the other is operators manual with lots of diagrams and details on the same trailer.

If you cannot find them on the web, I could email them to you. The operator's manual is about 4mb and the spec sheet is about 2 mb.

I've got one of those M-416 ex-military trailers and I love it.

I can carry enough gear and grub for my family to stay out in the wilds for a week at a time, if we want to, and with the pintle hitch arrangement, the trailer will go virtually anywhere my TJ will. It really makes the TJ a "family compatible" trail rig.

If you get one, I doubt that you'll regret it.

I've gone through three 4 wheel-drives in the time that I've had this thing and I have no plans to ever part with it.

I spotted these at a place called Swiss Army Vehicles in Fayetteville, AR last time I was driving through. I'm not sure if these are what you're after, but it's an option I suppose... looks like they've got 1 and 1-1/2 ton trailers going for $1500 or so.

Swiss Army Vehicles link

I know nothing about them -- just spotted them one day.

Gimme a max budget price that you would like to spend and I will see what is the best I can do

Ofcourse the trailers in the picture includes stuff like: Jerry can holders, kitchen, roof rack, propane tank holder, water tank, 4x4 wheels (which might be the most expensive part)

I can also provide links to roof top tents that will fit ontop of either the trailers or the jeep. These tents does cost an arm and a leg tho but its something cool if you got the $ to spend.

Like I mentioned before these trailers can range anywhere from $1500 to $15K

These trailers are usually custom build to the customers needs and requirements. If this post violates the forum rules please let me know.

You can contact me via email for more info
