New AGM battery dead?!

I just bought a AGM battery (rebranded Odessy/Northstar) and when I got it home and went to install it, figured I'd check the voltage and it was only 12.1V! Date code is A-14 so I think it's from January this year...

Should I charge it up and try it, or take it back asap? I thought new AGM's were around the 12.8-12.9V fully charged? I wouldn't think it'd discharge this much, this fast?

Doesn't give me a good feeling about this new battery

try calling the place where you bought it and see what they say. if needed, i'd google the exact battery first and see what the sites say. if it is low, then i'd try to recharge it with a good quality charger. if all that fails, then i'd take it back.

I went in earlier and asked them to test it. They did and called me and said it tested good and was charged up fully 13V and ready to go. I thanked them but once I drove the 1/2hr there they said it wasn't charged and only still read 12.6V at that time.
I got a refund and left.

i've had very good luck with an exide brand called Orbital. agm made in Spain. i have one that is over 5 years old and still going strong. pretty amazing considering the very cold winters we get here in northern Minnesota. just bought a second one for my wagoneer. i'm using their 'marine starting' battery for a little more reserve.
good luck to you.
