The before picture was acutally about 3 years ago but it still looked the same. Trust me, there was soooo much wrong with the paint. Plus, I have always wanted and obnoxious blue colored jeep. I also wanted something to work on that didn't take that much $$$. Ever since I read my first thread on this, i almost had to do this just to prove the thread wrong or be totally shocked and happy that it worked. I can understand if people don't get it. But, i paid for it and can do what I want to it.

Are more pictures on the way?

Looks like you did a good job on it, I'm surprised it came out so well.

I only did one coat per day. Sometimes it was a couple days in between. While the paint dried between coats I did some side projects. I repainted my gas cap cover, healight grills and surrounds, and my fender flares. i also took off the rear bumper and painted that. The powdercoat was chipping in a lot of places. I used a sander against the chipping and the rust. Scuffed up the rest of the bumper and repainted it.

Here is what I used for the side projects. Krylon fusion, rustoleum high performance, self etching primer, and that rust tuff stuff I bought just to see what it was like. I also used rustoleum rust reformer but I couldn't find the can.

The fender flamers where pretty easy. Just clean them. Scuff them up and shoot a couple coats of krylon fusion.

Here are the headlight grills, and gas cap cover. I used a wire brush to scrape off the old rust and paint. Used the primer and then the high performance.

Here is the bumper. 2 coats of the rust reformer and 3 coats of the high performance

I used that tough stuff on the rings thinking it would be a grey color. Turns out it is more like a diamond plate color. I actually really like it.

Thats all for now. I'll get more pictures and stuff up tomorrow.

Likewise! What's your total expenditure (in dollars) for this project so far, if you don't mind me asking?

I wish I kept track of everything. I have seen some posts about this claim that it cost them $30. I think that is only if you are buying the paint, rollers, mineral spirits, and sandpaper.

You have to take into consideration everyhting else from plastic sheets to any tools you need that you don't have. For instance I didn't have any torx bits and had to by a set of them. I bought my cans of fusion, high performance, etc. Blue tape, small roller pan, some shop towels, big sponge. All the little things can add up. Also add in the Heruliner kit for $80. If you have everything you need and only are buying the paint and supplies I would say it shouldn't cost more than $50. I recently moved into a house and never had a garage so I had to get myself a bunch of "garage tools" wich cost a decent amount. If you want I will go back and get the "total" amount for everything if that is what you are looking for. For this project cost isn't the main factor it is time. It will take twice as long as you think it will. It did for me anyway.

I forgot to mention that after the rust reformer and high performance I used a couple coats of duplicolor clearcoat. Here is a before pic of the bumper

Here is the windshield folded down to paint the inside. I didn't used the roll on paint in here. I maksed it off and sprayed flat-black high performance. I think it worked out pretty well. I also didn't really need to mask the windsheild because I had to get it replaced anyway because of a big crack. I'll have to go take a pic of the insde, i can't find one. I'll post it later.

A little sof-top maintenance. I was skeptical but this stuff works great. The top is black and about 5 years old. It made it look like new.

Back to the painting. One thing I forgot to say, wipe down the paint with some mineral spirits before each coat. You need to clean the surface. Otherwise you will be painting over dust and debry.

At this stage we are at about coat six. Starting to look good to my surprise.

It looks good. It's not mirror shiny, but it does have a gloss. I have spent a lot of time with refinishing wood and I can testify that going though the steps of sanding, cleaning, painting, drying, sanding, painting, drying over and over again does work. It will be fun to see the final product.

As many people have said, the prep work for a paint job is a big part of it. I keep wondering if it would be worth it to do one's own prep work and the have it professionally sprayed. I guess like many other things, there are often several paths to the same result.

It won't be anywhere near a professional paint job. Nor did I expect it to turn out as good as it has though. Everything is in the prep work. A prof job will look horrible if the prep is bad.

Can't forget to do the doors.

I also used some Herculiner to do the door jam. I definately recomend this.

If you look at the left door, you can see a mirror finish. I think that is pretty impressive for this paint.

NEXT, are my A to Z Fabrication Rocker Guards. I am very happy with them so far. http://www.atozfabrication.com/catalog/jeeptjwrangler19972006rockerguards-p-2.html

Mine are the wheel well to wheel well model.

I ordered them bare steel. After a good cleaning. 2 coats primer, 3 coats rustoleum high performance, and 2 coats clear.

Primer:

Paint:

Installation:

It was pretty easy. I was able to do it without any help. As long as you have a floor jack you should be good.
