I figured i would start my very slow m416 trailer build
this is what i started with
1964 m416 1/4 ton military trailer

GOT SOME GOOD WORK DONE TODAY
PLANS NOW INCLUDE
1. NEW SHOCKS
2. NEW FLOOR
3. HAVE EVERYTHING SANDBLASTED AND PAINTED
4. CHANGE OUT HUBS TO MATCH TJ BOLT PATTERN
5. PAINT THE TRAILER TO MATCH THE JEEP
6. HAVEN'T GOTTEN THAT FAR YET

SURPRISED I ONLY BROKE THREE BOLTS ON THE ENTIRE TRAILER

i have used trailers on the 4x4 trails for many years. looks like you have some work ahead of you. consider a tail gate? it makes loading and unloading heavy gear a lot easier.

also, i have found over the years that trailer mounted jery cans should be placed behind, not in front of the trailer axle. This way as the fuel is consumed and transferred to the jeep's tank, the tongue weight will increase. otherwise, a balanced, loaded trailer, (assuming full jerry cans) will become unbalanced as the fuel is consumed. This can lead to negative tongue weight and other unpleasant things on the trail.

the lunette ring will drive you crazy after a while-- consider going with a receiver tube on trailer tongue. this way you can mix and match different hitching options and for increased security, pull the trailer end hitch and add a lock pin. this makes it darn near impossible to steal that trailer. i junked the pintle/lunette set up long ago and went with the Treg hitch, which is very quiet.

best of luck-- these trailers are fun, but can be a hassle on tight trails. Also, consider a receiver hitch for the rear. go to junk yard and get one from a wrecked truck. cut it down and graft into the trailer. there are many good reasons for a rear receiver on a trailer. add some shocks and bump stops and ur good to go.

Ditto on the Lunette hitch being noisy. Banga-banga-banga all day long with those things and they are expensive to boot.

Here is what I am using on my trailer I have under construction right now.

A 3 axis hitch.

The right side goes into the Jeeps Receiver and the left side is on the trailer. You can see more pics below.

looks good! here is a pic of my scrambler w/ the pack mule ---lots still to do getting it right. Using toyota leafs and H2 wheels and 37s to match the jeep.

my other trailer is a Venturecraft pop up-- it uses torsion suspension and IMO, makes it too bouncy for the trail. here's how i figured that out...LOL

close up-- but w/ the 35s (long gone). also aded some hose to the tailgate chains so they don't rattle and chip of the special rattle can paint.

an early incarnation-- it's a lot better looking now a days. front deck is done and skinned the front w/ diamond plate.

tried this but abandoned the idea. upper tower was for behind the big truck, but junked that in favor of a dropped mount to keep it all level.

yeah i have taken everything that bolts to the frame to my dad who is having everything sandblasted and painted out at the plant
saving me a bunch of money
