First it depends where you are on the island. State pass runs about $65 if I remember correctly and opens up Demo (Before 0700 or after 1700), Sore Thumb (Gilgo), Montauk, and Hither Hills. Suffolk pass is $90 I believe and opens up Smiths Point and a bunch of other county park beaches. I can only talk from the standpoint of the State Pass, but required gear is as follows: Jack, jack board, shovel, portable bathroom (Bucket with plastic bag works), some way to air up (Demo has air compressors and is close enough to the Thumb to take a quick ride over), and a fishing pole for every person. To be completely honest, as long as you have some fishing equipment you are fine, they are more strict on Demo. There isn't much to know or learn. Air down to what you feel comfortable with. The usual recommendation is half the rated pressure, but anywhere around 18-20 I found to work. Four wheel drive, stay in the tracks that are there, and don't try climbing dunes and your good. Hope to see you out there!
