Locker Experience Anyone?
I am looking to lock my front and rear axles. It's my daily driver so I'll save the money for a seletable. Dana 30 front, Ford 8.8 rear. What are my best options? I wanted to go with Eaton E-Lockers but I don't think they make it for the Dana 30. Can a front and rear ARB be run off the same ARB compressor kit and where do most people mount them? Also, I'm kinda affraid of the air system, just seems like a lot of parts to go wrong. How reliable are the air systems?
I really appreciate any advice in making this decision. Twig

ARB's Air Lockers are very reliable if an experienced installer takes his time and does the job right. No issues there whatsoever, but you do need to be assured the installer is experienced installing them. Yes just one compressor is needed for both lockers. Avoid being talked into using ARB's reinforced air line over the standard air line. Not even ARB recommends using the reinforced air line because 1) the standard air line is way stronger than required and 2) the reinforced air line could damage hard to repair (on the trail) components if it were snagged on the trail. The standard air line services as an easily repaired (<5 minutes) "fuse" if it somehow got snagged on the trail. Which isn't a problem anyway if the air lines are routed properly and up out of the way.
If it were me, I'd go for f/r ARB lockers.

I agree-ARB,s are very reliable if installed right.I mounted my compressor under the vacuum booster on the tray. You can save some $$$ if you install the compressor & run the air lines yourself. Just take your time & do a good job.

If I had the money I would do ARB's f/r w/ no question asked. They are super reliable and for a daily driver, you cant go wrong. I have heard good about the E-lockers, but IMO there is some much junk mounted to the outside of the diff cover that that scares me more than an air line ever would.

I just put an ARB in my D30 and a Rubi locker in my rear 44. As noted, you will save on average about $125 by routing the air lines and installing the compressor yourself.

If you have the money go for ARB's or E-lockers. They both have a proved to be great. For my 30/8.8, I went the cheap way...lockright and welded the rear.
That's just me, if I had the cash I would have went selectable!

Well your next step down are auto lockers. The best of them is the full Detroit that replaces the whole carrier. The cheapest way to go besides welding [lincoln locker] are the "lunchbox" lockers. These replace your side and spider gears. They require no gear setup to install. These would include the Powertrax No-Slip and Lockrite, the Aussie locker etc. You can buy these for $200-$300 each.
You should find out how these things behave before you consider them. There's no turning them off so they effect how your Jeep handles on the road and especially in snow and ice. Jim

I have a Lock Rite up front, and I dont even notice it when its just in 2wd. Of course in 4wd its noticeable, and does what is should. I would not run a full Detroit up front in my case unless I had a manual hub conversion, but thats just me.
And yes, it really really depends on your weather climate, I live in Texas, and the only ice I see is the one in the freezer. |

what is the reason for the lockers? what im getting at is you may want to consider getting new gears also and a bigger set of tires since someoine is going to be installing the locker anyways. get it all done a once
