They say it's made from 13 gauge (.09"). Looking at the photo, the tines also have a ridge bent down the center for strength. I'm not saying you couldn't bend them, but it seems pretty heavy duty for a shovel. Of course if the tines did bend it would render the shovel all but useless.
Still hard to get past $80 for a shovel. If you do get it, post back and let us know how it works.
Those tines aren't very long and they have enough of an angle that I think they would hold up to a lot of use where a shovel is an appropriate tool. However, if you try to use it where a pick would be a more appropriate, then no, they're not going to hold up - and if they did bend then it wouldn't be good for anything but sand after that.
Edit: Actually, after thinking about it, a $20 shovel and a $20 pick would probably be more useful at half the price.
I personally would not stow tools for digging. But, if I did, the only thing one would need is a "Council tool." aka San Angelo bar. Or, Spud Bar.You can cut down a tree, break up a concrete pier, and, even dig in the dirt if that is the plan.
Below is a 48" one. I have a 72" at home without any bend and it will break and dislodge any boulder or root mass. Split a concrete block, destroy a padlock; pry stuff with a 225lb guy's full body weight, break a tire bead etc. (EDIT: To break a tire bead with this tool one only has to put the flat end of the council tool on the tire all the way up to the rim at a right angle and walk up the tool.)
A spade shaped shovel is a great tool for sand or to make a fit pit. But not for serious digging, IMO.

Well, for what it's worth, I actually just used one yesterday helping to get a beached Chevy Malibu out of the sand. Worked well enough in sand, but then again, it's sand. Pretty pricey for a shovel; I do like the smaller handle, which fit into the back of a JK easily.
