Jerry can toolbox?

So I've got the OR-fab tire carrier on my jeep now. One thing I was thinking about doing was taking an old jerry can and turning it into a tool/recovery box. I was going to cut it in half about two thirds of the way up, and use a heavy hinge and clasp so that it would open/close. I'd use a bungee on the top half to hold a tow strap in place, and store tools/other gear in the bottom!! Anybody out there that's already done this? Any tips or pointers?

Sounds like a cool idea. Make sure you take pictures along the way to document your step-by-step process.

I found an ammo can at a local surplus place about the same size as a fuel can. The ammo can is about 18" tall x 11" wide x 6" deep. I think it might be a 60 mm ammo can but all the ones I've found online are only 16" tall but could be easily modified. I attached a small piece of angled steel to the top and a small flat plate to the bottom and coated it with a can of spray on bed liner. It fits tightly into the NATO can holder on my bumper and holds my recovery gear.

It's a clever idea, but making it water/dust tight would take some work.
If you do end up making one, take lots of step by step pics.
The ammo can was a good idea too.

LjMix a Jerry can with an ammo box?

I have been toying with this same idea since buying my Jeep in June. It has the Body Armor spare tire carrier, which must have a can with the original dimensions and handle. My thought is to cut the can with my band saw near the top, then weld the hinge and latch assemblies off an ammo can onto it. I am assuming I will have to weld a lip around the cut line for strength and to provide an overlap. I doubt it could be made waterproof. The other thought I had was to simply cut a big rectangular hole the side of the jerry can and try to fabricate a hinged door. Not too sure how that would work. With the new clean air rules, it is hard to find anybody who will sell and old Jerry can and I hate to invest $40 in a new one to experiment. I agree with the others, if you do something, take some pictures and post them.

This is my favorite version right here: Very very cool if you are going to do the swing-out tire carrier as well. I just filled up my 2nd Jerry with gas, got home and realized that the gas is about 1/2 rust now...going to have to dump 5 gallons and turn this one into a toolbox, and this is how I'm going to do mine:

Jerry Can Toolbox Writeup

Enjoy!
