Ah-yup. X3 Ain't nothing better on the trail than NOT having to frig around with your back-up fuel cans. Just leave them in place, and use that siphon. ( we call it "the jiggler" cuz that all you do to get it started)
I used to carry a funnel, and tried the three-handed monty of holding the funnel and the jerry can at the same time while trying to not spill the gas as you filled the tank. That jiggler (siphon) is the only way to go.
There are spouts specifically made for scepter cans, if I recall correctly it was not easy to find one a few years ago when I was looking. I think I got mine from a vendor in Canada who still sold the scepter cans.
As others note, corrct spouts cheaply avail. Why hassle dismounting it? The super siphon works perfect. Invest in a cap opening tool abd do not forget viton gas rated gaskets. Diesel gaskets will fail fast. Good luck.
The military continues to use these cans, so they (and their spouts) are definitely still in production. Most of the Scepter spouts I have used on the military side are flexible metal ones, but I'm not seeing them on these sites.
I purchase for my Unit, I can by those scepter MFC all day long BUT they are not legal for sale (other than Military) in the US. HOWEVER you can buy on ebay. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/scepter-fuel-can
These cans are great, they will not leak fumes or liquid at any angle if they are in good shape. There are two different type seals under the cap, one is for gas they other for diesel. If you have the wrong seal eventual it could leak but buying seals is not an issue like buying the cans.
I recommend using the "giggler" from Harbor Freight. However, the hose that comes with it is cheap, and kinked to easily, so I replaced the existing hose for a better one that is more rigid (sold by the foot at Home Depot), and works great. It will transfer 5 gals. in a matter of minutes.
came across a guy on the trail last summer. he was low on fuel and needed to txfr fuel from external jerry can (old metal style) to the main tank. He was very flummoxed looking for the key to padlock securing the rear mounted can. Plan was to dismount can, screw on spout then pour in. Then reassemble. Once he found key, lock was buggered up. (grime, dirt, rust, ??) He was getting really mad at the world and kids crying. I eased over to show how a shaker hose style siphon works and there was no need to even dismount the can. In 30 seconds can was empty and in the main tank. His jaw was dropped and eyes deer in head lights.
Another convert to easy fuel transfer-- no leaks, no mess and fast. Once one uses one, there is no going back to old school.
