Jeep will start but wont move

My friends jeep will start but it won't move. It's a 2001 TJ with the 4.0 5 speed in it. He said it would struggle going up hills a lot and now it won't move at all. Any suggestions on what it is? I have an idea but I'm not positive.

If the engine is running but it's not moving...clutch.

Like MoJeepDriver said, clutch OR the transfer case is in neutral. I have heard of it happening.

I thought about the transfer case but he said it started out struggling uphill. The transfer case would be either in or out. Clutch slipping would fit the bill. Or a bad pressure plate.

I would normally agree with you BUT you ever have one those "friends" that like to mess with your jeep? Had one put my t-case in neutral once!
And yes, with the fact it struggles uphill I would lean towards the clutch as well.

So tannerkincaid tell us this, if you get the jeep moving and you punch the gas pedal does the engine race but you not go anywhere?
