I don't know if this has ever been brought up in the past, in this forum or another, but I was wondering if anyone made a rear seat that can be folded back (as opposed to the forward stowage position) so that it can turn into bed. Or perhaps a mod to the existing seat would make this possible...? A while ago someone posted a thread regarding sleeping in their Jeep and this idea popped into my head. It seems like something so simple. This is something I would take full advantage of if it can be done.
sounds like a great idea. I'm sure if you looked at a diagram of the pivoting point on the seat you could see where it stops it from folding back and just cut it off.

I'm really not sure. it depends if the locking mechanism locks it in place against the thing that keeps it from going
all the way back or if it actually locks it in place and the thing keeping it from going back is just for safety.

Well thinking about making a track and a "bypass" so the seat folds flat and then the track will allow the seat to roll forward while flat so it doesn't hang out the back
i would just make
sure that the locking mechanism is still strong. if someone was in the back and you had an accident you wouldn't want the seat to
fold back on them.
I like the idea of a fold down seat for hauling options, but it just isn't feasible to sleep in a Wrangler if you're of average height. As mentioned above, how are you going to sleep on a 3 foot bed?
I've never understood the desire to sleep in a Wrangler. I'm wondering what your life is like such that you could take "full advantage" of this seat. Just pack a tent and be done with it.
Grand Cherokee = you can sleep diagonally, unless you're goofy tall like Zdeno Chara
Wrangler = forget it
Wrangler Unlimited = as long as you don't mind fetal position or a pitched angle.
Don't screw with the seats; you're asking for trouble in an accident or just plain failure. Just like those 3rd row aftermarket seats for Wranglers; how much do you have to hate somebody to stick them back there ... just not a good situation.
I'm 6'3 and can sleep in a tj in the fetal position. Not the most comfortable, but when sleeping under the stars becomes the great flood of 1914, its not bad.
Honestly, I am not a small individual, I a 6ft tall so no giant, but I have this whole I need to get back in the gym issue so over 300lbs and even when I was in shape, my shoulders were close to 25" across. To say I have a broad build is an understatement. I can sleep just fine in a wrangler and have recently. I had the back seat in and full of stuff from a cross country trip (yeah, in a soft top jeep wrangler in dec/january and all that snow and cold. Was fun) and I still had enough room to push the seat back, recline it enough to comfortable and throw a blanket around me to get 7-8hrs of sleep.
Not quite as comfortable for sleeping in as say my dodge magnum where I can fold the rear seats down and nearly have a full size bed in the back, but still quite comfortable and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
it's about being able to if you need too. by the time you fold the front seats up and put a pillow up against the tail gate I bet it wouldn't be that bad.
I slept in my old TJ several times. if the top is down you can sleep across the back seat just stick feet out the side and pillow on wheel well. I would think a tarp ran over the roll bar would work in a rain. Seat pushed back and tilted works for temperary nap when you have time. I think if one would take the rear seat out, tilt the passanger seat forward and place plenty of padding down the back could be used to sleep in. I dont have a jeep out here or I would try it, but maybe its possible to rig a bunk or litter that sits on the rear seat when folded. Going from the tailgate to the dash or back of the passanger seat when leaned forward. like a cot or something. Wonder how far the short back seats in a CJ folded forward.
I don't like being scrunched up when trying to sleep. I tried sleeping in my TJ with the seat reclined when going to Moab once. Got a couple hours of sleep and it was uncomfortable. Handgun was close-by just in case someone wanted to get stupid.
I'd suggest getting a tent-cot and setting it up beside the Jeep to sleep in. You don't need to stake it down (you can do it in a parking lot) and it's pretty quick to set-up and take-down. And you're just as safe in a tent-cot as you would be in a soft-top Jeep. And since you can stretch out and get comfortable in a tent-cot you'll get a better quality sleep.
Sleeping curled up on my marshmallow seats, with a few pillows and a sleeping bag. Feels better than sleeping in my bed. I'm 6'1. :2thumbsup:
