how to empty a jerry can

Is there some trick to getting gas out of a gerry can? Mine has no vent hole in it and it takes forever to pour gas out of it. Do people typically drill and tap these to put in some kind of vent hole? I just wondered how others use gerry cans.

I recently purchased a jiggler siphon hose from Harbor Freight (here in California) for about $5.00 and they work great on Jerry cans. The only down side is that you have to hold the can higher the the receiving tank for the siphon. They work fairly fast and siphon very close to empty.

For god's sake empty it before drilling the hole.

I think Wedco gas cans have a vent-pipe inside them that comes up to the filler neck.

Actually, if you're gonna drill the thing, it would be safer to drill it with the can as FULL of fuel as you can get it.
Better yet, fill it with water, drill, empty it, add fitting, let can dry thoroughly before adding fuel again. If you're worried about it you can add some dry gas, upon fuel refill, but if you let it dry sufficiently, the dry gas is unnecessary.
It's the fuel/air mix that explodes, you don't want any air in the thing when you drill.

Of course, if it's a new unused can, drill away.

I have a spare old electric fuel pump. I added a couple clear hoses to it and a power cord. Poof, mega pump.

Go buy some some cheap brake bleeders, or a curtiss valve and tap it into the can ..when you want to pour the gas, open the valve... keep fuel from leaking out with just a hole in it

hold the can flat, (parallel to the ground), and it will pour just fine.

What size filler tube are you using? 1/2 inch or 1 1/4 inch? that wil make a big difference on how fast the fuel flows from the can into the tank.

It's not that, it's the air that has to replace the fuel. There is usually no air hole.

I just stick a hose in the can and siphon the gas into the tank, raising one end of the can 3/4 inch helps if you put the hose to the bottom on the low side. The flex nozzles all leak as you dump the gas into the tank (they leak worse if you vent the can).

Enjoy!

Just to let you know, the old style Jerry Gas Cans (military style) are not DOT approved and are actually illegal to use now. Plus they are in the process of passing a law that gas cans will require a child safe lid too. There is a lid for the old style that has a spill proof filling tube and will make them legal, but will not be legal when the new law goes into effect (child safe lid).
The old style are just slow to empty and usually leak all over the place. puttputt56
