Ummm, a shovel is for moving dirt, mud or snow from one area to another. My guess is that you think shovel is spelled differently. My question is where in the English dictionary is the word, "Equipt?"

Actually, Copper, the dictionary states: an implement consisting of a broad blade or scoop attached to a long handle, used for taking up, removing, or throwing loose matter, as earth, snow, or coal. That's right: COAL. Don't forget the Coal next time, because I don't know about you, but I am just all the time throwing coal around this way and that. Never know when you are going to get into a coal pit and have to shovel your way out.
You don't want to show up poorly equipt, do you?
Haha. This thread went from annoying to awesome in just like 2 hours. You guys are cracking me up.

I didn't ask what a shovel was used for. I asked what the hell it was. It was my lame attempt at humor so you would know I wasn't trying to be a jerk. You can say I'm not funny and I'll understand. It's never been my strong suit.
The word "Equipt" is under "E" in the dictionary. You can find it if you use the alphabet system.

equipt:

equipt
A adjective
1 equipped, equipt
provided or fitted out with what is necessary or useful or appropriate; "a well equipped playground"; "a ship equipped with every mechanical aid to navigation"
|
Now you'll probably ask why I'd be so stupid to use the phrase "strong suit". That on can be found under the letter "S"...
Quote:
strong suit
n.
1. A quality, activity, or skill in which a person excels: Foreign policy was the President's strong suit.
2. Games A long suit in a card game such as bridge that contains high cards.
|
I thank God that I'm learned enough to not have to use a shovel to make a living. Shovel is under "S". Learned is under "L"...
Quote:
learned
learn·ed [ lúrnəd ]
adjective
Definition:
1. highly educated: well educated and very knowledgeable
a learned professor
2. scholarly: showing or requiring much education and knowledge
a learned journal

Ok, this has gone far enough. Just hug and make nice, would you guys?
And Beth: I have a Master's Degree and use a shovel to make a living. You don't have to be "unlearned" to do so, you just have to enjoy doing it so much that the almighty dollar doesn't deter you from doing what would make you happy.

I know man, forgive me for that. I fell into the trap of this cursed thread and was trying to be rude on purpose. This thread does that to people. All I am is a truck driver. I do it because of the freedom of having no boss nearby, and so my mind can be free all day. I'm sure not going to become rich this way but it makes me happy. Although technically I never meant to imply that you had to be "unlearned" to use a shovel for a living, I understand where you're coming from. I wear jeans and steel-toed boots to work every day because I'm not about getting rich.
Now forget shovels, let's get back to insulting each other about Hi-Lifts! Only the dumbest of the dumb use the factory bottle jack!

I like the Tough Stuff hood mount. I've had it on for a couple years now. It wasn't my first choice, but seemed the simplest and now I've grown so accustomed to it that Jeeps without it look like something is missing. My Hi-Lift was new when I put it on and it has not rusted one bit...even having gone through a couple of salty Utah winters. Personally, I don't think it will make you look like a newbie or wannabe, either.

This reminds me of the movie "Tombstone" when Doc Holiday challenges Ike Clanton to a spelling contest.
Under different circumstances I think we'd be pals. You could come over and jump in the concrete pond with Elly May. I'd never get rid of you.

Well I'm lucky enough to haul locally to my home so I'm home every night. That's the only way to do it. I haul LP gas from one propane plant to the next all day. It's not demanding and all day I listen to audio books or talk radio. I just hope I can keep this gig for the next twenty years.
Now, to stay on topic I feel I should say... the Hi-Lift is cool and bottle jacks are stupid!

But I refuse to mount mine inside the cab because I'm a new father and I'm paranoid about stuff flying around in the cab with the baby in the event of an accident. And I'm leary of cases that may hold water that will rust the jack.
So what can be done? Can I just keep a fresh coat of wax on the hood-mounted jack? Should I keep it in a case, or should I just let it weather and repaint it when the time comes?
The hood mount looks great IMO. But my Hi-Lift is brand new and I'd hate to see it rust...

No rust? then do this.
Safety? then do this.
Security? then do this.

I don't see how you'd have a soft top problem with a mount like mine on the roll bar. Take a close look at the pics to follow.

X2
Here's what I did to my 48" Hi-Lift with 4" muffler clamps. You'll need to cut one side bolt of each clamp shorter than the other to accomodate. It'll make sense once you line them up and see.
Pic from back:
I added another clamp for the front side of the base after this pic was taken.
The other (driver's) side:
Note the cable lock at the base. Added security and peace of mind. It's TOTALLY secure, doesn't make a single sound, makes a great hanger when camping, easy to grab onto when climbing in the back. But if you have your rear seat still in, it's minimal headroom for anyone over 5'4". I have my back seat out and two 50mm ammo cans bolted to the floor, so no headroom worries. $24.00 total DIY.
Hope this helps.

Those are good pics, thanks. I think your Jeep looks badass. I like the placement of everything if you don't plan on having passengers.
The reason I was worried about mounting a Hi-Lift in the cab was because I used to have one of those Tuffy overhead consoles. It mounted between the windshield and the rollbar. I was teaching my niece how to drive in a field and we hit a ditch that was hidden by very tall grass. My wife, who was in the back seat and buckled up, actually bounced up and broke her nose on the rear of the Tuffy console. If the Tuffy hadn't been there she still may have broken it on the rollbar, but at least it was padded. The sharp edges of the Tuffy cut the bridge of her nose. I sold the Tuffy and vowed to never have anything like that in the cab again.
You can say it was a special circumstance because I was teaching someone to drive, we were in a field etc... but even a low speed fender bender would've been worse.
My brother-in-law was also in the back seat and buckled up. He cut his back pretty bad near the kidney area on the factory metal bracket to the side of the rear seat.
Here is the rear of my TJ. The only thing that has changed since the picture was taken is that now there is a second child seat back there. The episode where everyone in the back seat got hurt was before kids and while the back seat was installed.

Thanks for the compliments. If you want to do anything/everything the way I did, I used bolts through the floor from the underside, nuts on the top of the floor to secure the bolts in place, those bolts through the ammo cans and then wing nuts to hold them secure. That way I can reach down in the cans, "unwing" the wing nuts and release the cans to install the rear seat. If/when I have to do that AND carry my Hi-Lift, I put the Hi-Lift on the rear swing away tire carrier. I also remove the rear seat belts when the cans are in.
