On the increasingly rare occasion when I carry mine, I have this mount:

idea

hey, I have an idea! Since the guy simply asked a question- how bout just answer the guy and help him out? We all know you "veterans" know better than everyone else and love to show us how stupid we all are "don't mount it there" "that's not safe" "it's best to leave your jack at home" and my favorite, "You just like the way it looks". Who cares? IF I like the way it looks and it serves no other purpose, so what? Do you have to be a jerk everytime you answer a thread? Are you that miserable that your main goal in answering a question is to point out the stupidity of the person asking the question? I know you're all going to get bent out of shape that someone dare talk down to you. That's really not my intention but almost literally every post on here has a smart a** response from a veteran who knows everything. Do you really need $7000 worth of suspension? SInce you have that is no one allowed to dare ask a question? Geez man- lighten up and be helpful. It's a freaking hood mount we're talking about- not a heavy political or religious delimma. And you know who you are...watch...you guys who get on here and begin preaching about how you're just "sharing your experience"...bs...you love to be short and just plain rude at times to people who aren't as "into wheeling" as you are. This isn't an "extreme wheeling only site"...it's just a jeep site. chill.

Wow, that's your first post? It took the rest of us years to be not helpful. WHEN you are here long enough, you tend to see posts of new people thinking up what appear to be bad ways to do common things. I for one would rather be helpful by questioning the bad way than assisting in implementing it. I'm not going to help a guy implement a 3" body lift to put 33's on a YJ, sorry.

Well since this thread was just revived i thought that i would throw my homemade version of the hilift mount on the cowl

Yea i cant fold my windshield down, but it doesnt bother me, yea its out in the elements but ill pull it off and grease it about every 3,000 miles (i can open my hood and use the prop with the jack on but thats annoying, and i can still lift the hood all the way up when its off and its perfect to take it off and grease it up)

That's kind of funny. If something were to hit the jack up by the windshield hard enough to break it off it's mount, and hard enough to propell the jack through the windshield and frame, most likley that thing is following it in as well and ain't nothing going to make much difference.

I say mount it where you like it, just make sure it's secure that it won't fall of on it's own while bouncing down the trail. Mine is mounted off the rear of my jeep, but it's garage stored, so weathering isn't much of an issue for it.

You are overlooking one of the great things about this site, if someone thinks something is a bad idea, they'll tell you, and usually tell you why it's a bad idea, and give some story to back it up. Wether or not you want to listen to everyone's advice is your decision, because this is a forum, not a Jeep manual. Don't believe me? Go to the YJ tech section and ask a question about 3 inch body lifts.

I think someguy09 is responding mostly to a certain post which claims that people only mount their jack on the hood for looks. That one kind of got to me too when I read it right after it was posted. I just went back and re-read it and it doesn't sound so insulting the second time around. I remembered it more like an insult to newbies and posers.

Personally I do think it looks fine. I can't mount mine across the rear roll bars because I want to get a Trek top or Viking Top. I'd mount it between the tailgate and spare tire but I don't know of a mount that will work with a stock bumper and that isn't overpriced. For what it's worth, I think the hood mounts are overpriced too, as is everything for the Jeep.

I do appreciate advice though. Like about denting your hood or not being able to raise your hood all the way up etc. I do like the Hi-lift and have used it many times for various things. I don't want to carry wood blocks around to use with my bottle jack. I've also used it like a winch. But I'm all alone in the woods. I don't go out on actual Jeep trails with other 4X4 people who might have tools. I hunt, and work around the property alone usually and don't have help. The Hi-Lift is also nice in a foot or two of snow when you don't want to get on your knees and dig a spot for your bottle jack and wood blocks.

I have a hi lift bolted to the hood and yes, I like the looks. I drive around with friends in the California desert and what I am mostly concerned about is helping other people who get themselves stuck in the sand who don’t have appropriate vehicles or experience. I have a winch, recovery straps, and the jack and I have had to use every one of them depending on the circumstances. I use the hi lift for lifting up a stuck wheel and putting rocks and stuff under it so we can usually drive what ever it is out. Usually, the cars won’t have a good recovery point so this is the safest way to unstuck them. You can do this with a bottle jack but it takes longer and sometimes you have to dig underneath. You can’t leave people out there alone in the desert, especially when it is hot.

I use to have mine on the rear bumper, until I was rear ended last month and it bent my jack to a 60* angle around the tub. Damnit. So now I too am looking for a new place to mount. I do not want to put it on my roll bar because I often fill my "trunk" and need the space. I do not want it on the front bumper because it is too vulnerable to be bent AGAIN. I like to carry mine all the time because you NEVER know when or what you may use it on, even driving home from work (or on your way to work??????!) I want to mount mine on the hood because it is the best spot for me, not because I want to show it off.

on a side note, this is the route im going to help protect my jack from the weather.

I think it's generally agreed here that a simple bottle jack or even the OEM scissor jack is best for simple on-road tire changes.

x2 I think the stock jack's are good for up to a 33/35 inch tire, mine was rusted to the point where it didn't work, so I picked up a bottle jack for $20 at the hardware store, and it works fine. The bottle jack has even been used off road more than the hi-lift.

i'm a poser newb, mine's on my hood. it may go on the back someday but i like it where it is. my jeep lives indoors and is only trail driven or on nice days so weather isn't an issue. as little as i use a high lift, i like it out of the way and i don't ever plan on dropping my windshield.

I was driving home one midnight and found a wrangler rolled off the side of a country road. I stopped and jumped out to make sure no one was seriously hurt. The man driving the jeep was ok, just shookin up. He was run off the road by a passing freight truck. The jeep was layed over on its side. If we could get it upright he would have been able to drive it home. I used my hi-lift and two tow straps to flip his jeep back up on all fours (this was before I bought my winch). No cell service, and no passing motorists. I keep my hi-lift on me at all times because, like I said, you never know. Not just a simple tire change. I feel that it is rude to say anything about a jeep is "poser".
