Help w/ winch wiring

Hi, all. I just bought a stock '95 YJ w/ 4.0 and 5-speed. I also just bought a Badlands 12k winch from C/L which had no wiring or remote, just the winch and fairlead. Looking at the winch motor wiring, I'm guessing that the two leads at the end of the motor 180 degrees apart, with red insulator on top and black insulator on bottom ought to be connected directly to battery + and -. There are two leads nearer the spool on top of motor that are colored yellow and black. I am guessing that these are relayed power (yellow) and relayed ground (black). Before I get out two sets of jumper cables and start making sparks, does any one know if my surmises are correct? If I am wrong, how should it be wired? I have two Ford starter relays and a wired remote to wire to them, along with a plastic ammo can to house all the electricals. I don't yet have a breaker for the power lead. Any idea how many amps I should go for? I'm guessing in excess of 100 amps, which is the biggest resettable breaker I can find online. If it should have, say, 200 amps, I'll wire two 100 amps units in parallel at the battery + if I can't find a 200 amp or greater unit. John

What you really need is at least two solenoids and a hand control. There may be 3 posts on the motor. Do a web search for winch wiring and you will find a plethora of diagrams.

FWIW I ran #6 welding cable to mine, I believe..

Here's the wiring diagram for the Badlands 9k

The black on the bottom of the motor is the ground to the motor. I'm not 100% sure on the others, but I'm thinking the black on top of the motor is the ground to the relay box. Then the red & yellow are power, with one being on& one being out.

Winch wiring

I should have done more homework before buying parts. Instead of two relays (the ford starter relays should work fine) I will need four and the wiring diagrams I have seen are much more complex than I originally thought. I have only the winch and fairlead, not the original relay box, which I will have to duplicate, as the HF "help desk" in some Asian country says they will no longer supply parts for the 12000 lb winch. Thanks for the help though. John

I wouldn't put much money in that badlands. A brand new 12k can usually be had for $300 sometimes less

Its interesting that HF is no longer sourcing parts for the 12k winch. Must mean they will be phasing them out, or at least redesigning the winch. Seems kind of odd, though, I thought the 12k was one of their more popular winches.

Just to be curious, how much did you pay?

None
