I want to build a 5x8 utility trailer to haul stuff behind my LJ.
(1) Gross weight will be 3500#.
(2)It needs to be foldable so I can store it between a fence and shed. I'm going to build caster wheels to attach when its folded so I can easily move it around when folded.
(3) 3500# torsion axle with electric brakes (no such thing as too much braking).
(3.1) preferably 5x4.5 bolt pattern hubs.
(4) Provisions for removable sides.
(5) Easily removable plywood deck.
(6) Telescopic tongue.
(7) Rear hitch receiver.
(8) Provisions for a ramp.
I've started making a 3D model at work. I'll post screen shots of what I have so far later. I haven't modelled the hinges yet.
The frame is 2 x 3 x .120 (red, yellow, blue).
The green is 2.5 x .25 (makeshift 2" receiver).
The grey is the telescoping tongue, 2 x .120 x 48" OAL.
Is the frame overkill? It weighs 275lbs as pictured. I want to keep the 3" height for easier mounting of the 2.5" tube. Refer to the picture for dimensions.
Should I center the axle under the cargo deck?
Tongue length? For normal duty, I'd like it to be long enough that the trailer can be 90* to the Jeep without contact. Any reason for it to ever be shorter? Maximum length?
Do I even need the A frame considering how my tongue is mounted? The 2.5" tube will extend to the minimum tongue length, telescoping tube just long enough to get to the maximum tongue length.
