I just got mine today! From costco for $48. Great deal and it works really well.

I am going to try to install mine on the driver's side battery tray, but it is a tight fit. I am thinking about spinning the head unit 90 degrees to the right (looking down from the top) and mounting it sideways. I would also have to move the foot braces 90 degrees to the side. This way it won't be so tall and will fit under the master cylinder. Plus, the gauge will be at the top and the male connector will be to the side. There shouldn't be any negative effects of having it mounted on its side, right?

Does anyone have a write up and/or pics on how to permanently wire it?

I did take some and I will post them, but I need to take it back apart. I didn't tear into the motor piece, just took apart the piston and compressor on the outside, cleaned and regreased all the pieces that were mega dirty. However, the motor noise stayed high pitched and barely pushed any air. So I'm going to have to tear it all the way down, which is going to be a pain as they have soldered the wires out of the switch and relay to the motor, instead of using clips.

It's going to be a little while before I can dig in that deeply.

what a pain. Granted I'm still new to modding, but wow it took many attempts (and many holes in my now swiss cheesed aux tray) to find a spot where it would fit. My two main problems were: 1. The nuts I used underneath hit on the tray bracket in various places and 2. Positioning it so that I could get the tray mounting bolts back in once I got it in there... It's not a big compressor to begin with, so in its next iteration I may try to find a piece that I can replace the mounting holes on the compressor to span across the tray bracket and bolt directly to them rather than using the tray.

here's where I had it mounted initially (if someone wants to make it no clicky that'd be nice...)

that didn't work as the nuts I put underneath hit the tray mounting bracket.

several repositions later I finally put it here...

There was tray bolt that I was unable to put back in, so I used it to mount the compressor into one of the nuts welded on the bottom of the tray.

The switch end of the compressor hangs off the end of the tray and I had to remove that bracket from the end to get the whole thing back under whatever that PITA black brake-related drum above the tray is.

Anyway, due to my frustration I inadvertently forgot to put the pressure gauge back on when fitting it the last time, and wouldn't you know it, now it doesn't fit back there at all. No problem though I wanted to replace it anyway, I'll just find one that connects by tube and velcro it to the side if I have to...

Tray mount

I ran into that on my first TJ. On the next one I cut a piece of 1/8" AL that matched the tray and mounted it on standoff's so that I could bolt things to the plate and then reattach the plate to the tray. Ron

Longspoon - nice job. Drop on by Autozone and snag one of the Slime branded handheld pressure gauges. Threads right in, and it's more accurate than the POS they put on those compressors. Tire side of the gauge threads right off, and it threads perfectly into the housing.

Really

Really... That would be great. Can you post a photo of the gauge? I'll buy one today. Ron

The silver collar just threads off, the pin is stationary - you can grind it down if you'd like, but it fits inside the housing without modification, so I wouldn't bother.

I used copious amounts of teflon tape on it to protect against leaks

Here's my finished product - plumbed in a T so I can do dual inflation should I ever want to. Got my CO2 setup shortly after the compressor mod, so haven't tried out the dual hose. 150PSI with almost unlimited CFM kinda trumps this little weakling

Thanks

Very nice... Thanks a lot.. Can you believe that folks couldn't give the little compressors away when they first came out near two years ago? Everyone closed them out for $19.95 and I just missed it.. Ron

I wouldn't recommend mounting that compressor where it could pick up any water or moisture. I had mine installed in the same place you did, and during a big downpour, it got wet and never worked again. i got a new one and mounted it on the rear wheel well, right by the seat belt.......

Come to think of it, at the very least, I would put some kind of plastic bonnet over the air filter, and maybe put a thin bead of RTV around the switch housing. Everything else should be okay.

After completely disassembling mine, that's not fully true. You'll need it over anything that merges together to keep water out. Water could get through any section that merges together.

That being said, I just tossed mine after about a year of use. It took a beating and it appears that this last time the heat from the motor running melted the glue of one of the 4 magnets inside the base and shifted it about 3/4". Then once it shut down and the glue cooled, it's now stuck in that position. I've got pics I will post here in a little while, just have to take them off the camera and then resize them.

It did air up pretty close to 250-300 tires during it's lifetime. But now I'm going to look at other compressors until this winter when I work on my on-board after I get a house (with garage) this fall.

Didn't think of the heat generated by the engine/headers. Good point.
