What is the real difference in these two pieces? Look at all of the cast parts, they are identical withthe exception of where the ports are...you can tell with the bosses that are cast in to them. It just depends on where they are drilled and tapped for the air hoses and air filter. Take the handle off of the HF one and put a nice cover over it and they are almost identical. Look at where the switch is, they didnt even flip the switch, they just rotated the end piece 180 degrees. Is the difference in the motor or in teh piston stroke (rise or fall of piston). I wonder why the HF makes more heat if the compression and motor is the same. I am just wondering how different these pieces really are. Nice post

Went to Costco today (world headquarters in Issaquah) and couldn't find this compressor. They had another huge yellow portable one but it was nothing like this. Might have to check some of the other warehouses in the area.

How much did it cost you? I just might take mine back to Costco and get the Pepboys one if the price is better and it is really the same unit.

Thanks Ricky for a very thorough evaluation of the HF and Costco air compressor.
Your article prompted me to buy the Costco unit. I tested it on my Chevy Tahoe tires, took 3 minutes to pump from 25psi to 40psi. My JC Whitney use to take 15 minutes, then it would overheat and blow a fuse.
Thanks again, AL

I went to pepboys today and picked up my compressor. First off it is identical to the one at costco (its the same compressor just a different name). In the parking lot of pepboys I aired down one tire to 12psi, it took just at 4 mins to 35lbs. The only complaint i have is it got so hot i had to let it cool a few mins before i could even touch the connector on the hose to disconnect it. That was doing one tire only kinda worried now when i have to do all 4, I may have to let it cool between each tire but for under $40.00 (after rebate and $5 off coupon) I can deal with it for now. Im going to mount it in the back on the wheel I havnt.checked yet but it should clear the rails for the top and the seat when folded forward. Ill add the pics when its complete.

For those with the Pep Boys/CostCo compressor - is the pressure gauage accurate? Mine shows 25 PSI when the tires are really at 13, and 40 PSI when it gets to 28.

I've noticed you have to turn the compressor off to get a reading.

Yes, you need to stop the compressor to get a reading. Even still, both units were off by a substantial amount.
