I don't know if this is the right forum, but I just thought I would let you all know that I just picked up a harbor freight ad and they have the chicago 10,000 winch in the ad for $399.00. Price good till 08/28. It says marked down from $599.00. Either way, couldn't find it that cheap online anywhere. If you are looking for a cheap winch it's a good deal.

I picked up the 10k a while back - go on line and find a 20% discount coupon. you can get the winch for $319.00, that is what I paid.
Have had no problems with it and I replaced a HF 8000 lb with it. never had a problem the the 8k either.
Good luck.

If you get a chance, take a close look at a MileMarker electric winch and those Chicago Electric ones that Harbor Fright sells.
YEP, they are identical. Same winch. Sometimes you can find the Mile Marker priced cheaper.

I looked long and hard at the HF 10000# during this sale price period. Looked at every winch I could find info on. I'm on a very small budget so I finally went with the Costco Champion 8000# for $299. I bought the HF Jeep winch plate for $39. Will be installing it this weekend. So, in buying cheap, I spent about $$$ less, got a series wound winch, a great warrenty (I know the warrenty doesn't matter when I'm walking out of the woods), about 18# less weight on my bumper, and most importantly, finally have a WINCH.

You sure the Champion has a series wound motor?

If it were me, I'd drop down to an 8,000 or 9,000 lb. version of that winch to save weight. To me, a 10K winch is unnecessarily heavy when a slightly smaller winch is more than enough for a Wrangler size vehicle.

According to the spec sheet the motor is Series Wound 3.6HP with gear reduction ration of 210:1 I know it won't be a speed demon but there are a number of higher cost winches that are much slower. The bottom line for me was not a decsion of getting a Warn vs "cheepo" winch, but rather a "cheepo" vs NO winch. The frosting is if should it ever break, after the hike and a tow, I can return/refund back to Costo.

Winches either have "series wound" or "permanent magnet" motors. A series wound motor will have a longer life. In fact, it's this spec that I consider first when considering a winch.

I don't blame you. I'd consider a winch with those specs as well. This seems like a much better winch than the Harbor Freight with a 1.8 HP permanent magnet motor!
