best winch under $300?

I've been looking around and it seems rugged ridge, smittybilt, as well as harbor freight all have 8K winches for $299 or less. Are any of these good quality?

my smitty rxc8 winch has pulled my out twise with no problem, and i was sunk both times. of the three you mentioned i would go rxc8. if you wanna get a real nice winch, you need to look at warn or ramsy, imo

Every purchase is a compromise...even if you have unlimited funds (which most of us do not). My ex wife didn't want me to buy a two seater. She used the argument that I coached youth sports and what if i needed to take several youths to a game. Well, I said, they could ride with someone else. What if they can't, says she. Well, do I need to buy/drive a school bus then, says I. And, I continued, if my school bus is broken down, you should drive one too so I can use it as a back up!
I dropped the wife...and bought a 350Z. It was one of the best moves I ever made in my life.
That said, a $299 winch is probably better than no winch at all.
Go for it.

Chech the warranty policies and the warranty policies of the distibutor you buy it from. If you have any trouble see if they have to send it to manufactor for warranty.

I'm not gonna sit here and bash the quality of the Chinese made winches offered by Smitty, RR, Harbor Freight or Recon, but if it was me, I'd look around for a deal on a used M8000.

You can always find a deal with times being what they are nowadays.

I've had my M8000 for five years now, used fairly often (I have some farm property and there's always a task around the farm) and have never had a single problem with it.

I recently took it off my truck and put it on a portable mount for my GC because I stepped into a killer deal on a XD9000i. One year old, used once in a straight up trade for a $225 case of ammo! A member of my shooting club lost his job and found he liked shooting more than having a basically unused winch on his truck.

So there are ALWAYS deals out there if look hard enough...
