Any jerry can is going to work. They all pretty much the same concept. I use a plastic military one i got from my unit, for free. The spout is about the same as others. I also have a gas can i use for motocross. It is square at the bottom and tapers at the top. Its for fueling quickly and also works well. I like the motocross one better cause it doesnt leak, but i think if you got a new metal jerry can it probably wouldnt leak. Mine is about 10 years old.

A lot of that 'best' jerry can decision depends on the type of jerry can holder that will be used. Sometimes you have a choice of holder, other times like when it comes with a spare tire carrier you don't.
My Off-Road Fabricators spare tire and jerry can holder requires that the jerry can have a lip on the bottom to fit into the holder. Other styles of jerry can holders don't care whether the jerry can has a lip or is flat on the bottom. My Blitz jerry cans with the lip on the bottom have held up fine for just about five years so far. ![]()

Be careful on severely off-camber or really steep trails with that setup. Carrying that much gas and/or water that high up raises the center-of-gravity up a whole bunch!

I'll probably just drive around with the cans empty . . . LOL . . . I just want my jeep to look better than all the others at the mall . . . but you are right . . . things are getting heavy back there . . . maybe a nice winch on the front will help to restore the "balance" .

Metal cans rust, but plastic ones break.

i sure haven't seen it. and i've smashed my fair share. in my experience, plastic ones take impact very well-metal jerry cans start leaking at the seems with the first dent. if they dont leak already. i dont carry any gas on the jeep anymore-20 gallons always seems to be more than enough, unless i'm on an extended trip, then i'm dragging my trailer-and it holds about 14 gallons of extra gas. its built from a toyota pickup, and i left the fuel tank in, put an electric pump on and a length of hose. easy fillups. ![]() |

i carry t wo 5 gal cans-- one metal jerry can fgor gas (painted camo, of course) and never an issue w/ the coppers. the other is a mil spec 5 gal water can. i have never had to remove the gas can to transfer fuel-- just use a short siphon hose-- clean, fast and avoids the dreaded leaky spouts. i even added an in line fuel filter so that any transferred fuel is nice and clean. u'd be amazed at the crap the filter picks up.
