Is anyone engineering their own skids?

I'm all about home-made, as you might know.
Wondering how many of you have made or are making skid-plates for engine, tranny, gas tank, etc... I think I'm gonna go for it--try to that is. 3/16" steel ought to be good, eh?

.yeah, I've been researching doing these things for a while now, so I've got some pretty good info to go on, it's just a matter of doing it. I have a good amount of steel coming. First, I'm going to make bumpers, then I want to do the others, since I seem to bang up just about everything I'll scan some reg. photos when I get something substantial done. It might be a while though.

...just wondering if there are any others brave enough to try fabbing this stuff.
I can see Jim79CJ is a great metal fabber.....cool stuff on Cetrov's Jeep! I'm keeping things simple (KISS) to minimize the goofs.

Hell I'm engineering my entire Jeep. CJ body, Commando frame, Cherokee engine, Waggie tranny, CJ transfer case, etc... I'm working on the tranny/tcase skid right now. It will be flat and sit only about 1" below the frame rails. I built my own motor mounts to lift the engine 1.5" in the frame and a separate crossmember to support the tranny/tcase. I don't want the skidplate to support them. That way I can drop the skid without having to put a jack under the Jeep to support anything. I don't have pictures of the crossmember or skid yet. I'm still waiting on a clocking ring to get the transfer case clocked flat.

That's a great idea.

I knew of a guy who just built a shell around his OEM TJ skid plate. Used stainless Diamond Deck plate found in a scrap yard, worked really well.. I haven't done it yet because I don't have a household welder.

K9JEEP, I'm doing that with alumumin and I used a frame stretcher and pulled the frame to 103" wheel base. Next I need to turn a 258 w/ three speed and 231 into a 5.0L Ford with NV4500 and AtlasII, ha ha...

Nice and Sweeet...

My sliders are made from 2x5 box tubing w/ 1/4 wall.
They are connected to the frame using a 2" receiver type mounts, one on each end of the sliders.
We will see if they hold up.

Luck,
