Angle Finders

Does anyone have a strong preference for a particular brand? I need to pick a new one up to set my caster.

I have a couple of the cheap plastic ones from my local hardware store they work. Recently bought a Craftsman 6" digital torpedo level/ angle finder for $40. Its way easier to get a more accurate reading.

Does it have a magnetic base? As of right now, I was going to use a plastic one and double check that number with an iPhone angle finder app.

Yes it has a magnet. I bought it cause I was using the plastic ones to dial in my caster and wanted a more accurate reading.

I noticed it only has one flat surface--I think. What does it do if it is upside down?

It reads the same upside down or right side up. The one I got you can also switch it between modes, it will read degrees , inch in feet , and % of slopes

Get one with the largest diameter indicator you can find. Trying to see the difference between 4 and 5 is nuts on the cute little mini-dials most have. If you do the math on a 3" diameter dial, 1 is only .024" on the outside curve of the dial.

Imo stay away from the cheap Swanson ones from Lowe's. They work and they'reaccurate but they fall apart easily. I constantly have to put the pointer and plastic cover back on and it doesn't do much but sit around in a toolbox most the time. Just pulling it out makes everything fall off of it.

I have one with a 4" dial right now. Bought it for 8-9 buck iirc. I might get the craftsman one. It looks pretty sweet. My iPhone is more accurate than anything right now..
