Anyone off work a day or two this coming week and have some place they want to wheel at? I have all next week off and wouldn't mind wheeling someplace different. Just somewhere within reasonable driving distance of San Diego!
I got on my way at about 9 a.m. to meet the others at 10...
Nobody was ready at 10 when I got near so I headed out ahead of everyone.
I got there at about 11:00 am. and set about to explore while waiting on the radio for the others to get there.
First I went to the four trail intersection and took a left. A ways down the "Road there was my first campground. I pulled over and disconnected and air down a little bit. I headed back a bit to a real dirt road and took it. The girlfriend was on her maiden off-roading trip so I had to be gentle... so you know what I did?
I found trail number 3... Bronco peak... well Its rated severe difficulty but I wanted to show the girl what I was doing. I started the trail head and did some fairly difficult things but nothing worse than I have done in the past. I got to one point that looked extreemely difficult and decided that I didn't have back up so I shouldn't do it.
I got on the radio for the first of about 20 times and called for the others... DEAD AIR... So back to the 4 trails intersection... I went up to the fire lookout tower....(Mostly paved but rough) Girlfriend was now saying... Well... this is fun but a bit boring... Look at the map and find an easy run... then down the road we went. This was fun but really just a rough fire road... It had gotten to 1:30 so I pulled out the cell phone and guess what... I had signal so I call the others.... THEY HAVENT left yet...
Putt around on short trails looking for something safe to do and find nothing but motorcycle trails and extreeme trail ratings... or not reccomendeds. So at about 2:30 I call again. They are now on thier way but about another hour away. The girlfriend was bored and wanting to go home so off we went.
At about 3:00 Pm on highway 8 I saw the others heading up and about 30 mins away from Coral.
Well I went back to Coral canyone yesterday, I took my Daughter and my son (16 and 3)
The day started out great, met the folks at the campground and headed out.
We heading down a fire road to a trail I had seen the day before. It was rated Difficult but from what I had seen that meant a 2 or 3 on a scale of 5.
We had a very diverse group.
A Rubicon unlimited,TJ,ZJ,Full sized bronco (Desert rig), a full sized blazer, Stock xtera, and a stock 2wd Rodeo.
No Winch, No compressor, and I was in the lead, no air down.... haha
I will say this, the group did great. The only damage was all the mud flaps on the Xtera, and both side steps on the Izuzu.
So we finished up and I said my good byes, recconected and off I went.
I saw a couple of things I had wanted to try and did them. I ended up back in camp where Jeremy suggested that he was going to try the trail right near camp. I said ok... and headed over to look. It looked very difficult but almost doable. This will quickly turn into a story like, "I should have just left". We both agree that the trail is probably to tough but I want to try at least the first obsticle. If you know about unlimiteds you know the breakover angle is not to good stock. So I proceed to get hung up. I get myself off and look it over again. I looks like I just need a better posistion so I proceed to get myself REALLY STUCK.
Well the buddy hooks up the tow strap and pulls me back off. Well the tow seems to have put me at a bad aproach so I decide to just back out. The only problem is that my departure is now blocked but some boulders. AND IM SLIDING TOWARDS A STEEP HILL... as Jeremy so eliquently put it... "Hey at least those trees will stop you from rolling"
After about 2 hours of trying to get me off.. "THE GANG" came up with "Why don't you just go forward and drive down the slope?" I said... "Um... there is a tree in front of my rig. (This is where the greenies need to turn away) after exhausting all other options, I heard some chopping... Long story short, there is a rubicon sitting out in the parking lot here at work today.
I would like to thank everyone for 3 hours of their lives, helping me get out. Without you guys, I would probably still be there.
