I'm going to guess that a pinion/and or carrier bearing cage let loose.

Yeah I spoke to the guy about putting as much preload as possible. I took it to the guy I was talking about the other day. His name is John, he used to work in 4wheel parts and had his own rearend shop in Santee, called "mild and wild" or something like that.

So I was at the Ramona swapmeet over the weekend & scored a 04 Rubi pwr steering pump, gear box, two 2 1/2" Currie JJ's & a Hi lift isolator thingy all for 50.00... Cool right? Well the box on my 97 is becoming iffy & I thought I'd do a hydro assist w/ the replacement. Today I read on pirate that the 04 isnt a Saginaw & if you tap it it gets hella squirrely past 45mph. Anyone have any input or experience w/tapping an 04 to 06 tj box?

.

Just find a used box of a pre 2003 TJ, Or start looking at XJ's and Grand Cherokees. tHE 2003 and later TJ's have a different mounting bolt pattern, one mounting bolt hole is in a different spot

Yes it is on my 2004 TJ I still use the factory OEM powersteering hoses with a ported 1997 TJ gearbox and a PSC high volume pump.
So yes that pump will work, but then when you add the ram you want more pump volume
