There are some great kelp forests off the so cal coast. Some are fifty feet tall and higher.
Great for spear fishing with a Hawaiian Sling. Most of the larger marine life hangs out in there.

The animals are. And most of the fish. Just stay away from the lion fish (do research to be able to recognize him instantly)
Don't mess with the pesky in your face orange Garibaldi. State fish and a pest.
Watch our for the black sea urchins along the rocks. Their spines hurt.
Do NOT stick your hand into any holes in the rocks. Morey eels like to bite.
But for the most part, if you leave stuff alone, it leaves you alone. It usually sees you before you see it.
And bring a knife. Never know when you need to butter a piece of bread.
Kelp snaps like twigs and you can bite it in two easily.

To prevent the inside of your mask from fogging up, spit inside the glass, and rub it around, rinse out, then place mask on face. There might be a commercial product for that too.
Yeah i want a decent mask but not the best there is. I keep thinking what if i get a cheap mask and the mask strap snaps when im under water or something.

I carry this one on forearm strap....

And the larger version of this one on my calf......

About the only thing you need a knife for is to pry stuff off a rock, like an urchin to use as bait.
The other 'possibility' is if you are diving a kelp bed and get caught in somebody's abandoned fish line.

And the notorious abominable snow fish attack.

Yes and no. Some species are protected like the state fish and lobster when not in season etc...
Abalone and shell fish are OK, most fish, and urchins are OK. Stuff like that.
Get scuba certified. It's not expensive and my kids both did it when they turned 12 years old. I'm an advanced NAUI diver. Never went instructor. No interest.
Cave diving, wreck diving, all that stuff is a blast. My deepest dive is 165 feet. Cold and dark down there, but we were diving a wreck.
Mucho aloto funo.

That's a vintage knife. You may want to take it to a dive shop to find a sheath for it.

It looks like this one.

ya, all my google searches turned up that one as the closest match.

Thanks. I guess I'll take it to a dive shop and see what they can do.

Might be interested in a sunday run. I was working on my brakes before I went on vacation and I can't remember where I left it but I think it may be all done. Where to?

If anyone is interested, the rest of my vacation pix are here.

This store in the center of the little town has been there since about 1781.

Not sure when this was from.

And now.

Jeff, I was thinking Corral Canyon. Its close to home and I would love to see a couple more trails.

Looks like its going to be in the mid 80's for the weekend in the mountains so it will not be bad at all.

Whats the story with the Superman? I would say thats strange, but I was Down town last night.
