Scratched my door

I was getting out of my 2013 Grand Cherokee Altitude and I brushed against my back drivers side door and put a scratch about a inch and a half long and about as thick as a napkin. It's not very noticeable but to me it might as well be three feet long and 5 inches thick. I talked to a coworker who used to detail BMWs. He suggested I take some compound and buff it out and then polish it. I've never tried something like this, does anyone have any tips or suggestions??
