i bought some dupli-color truck, suv, and van matte black spraypaint. i intend to paint the door hinges and hood hinges black to make them look nice. you can buy them but i dont see the point when you can just paint them. i was just wondering if there are any tips or precautions i should be aware of. i am removing the brackets for painting so dont have to worry bout overspray.
When I did mine, I sanded the hell outa them, down to bare metal (a dremmel would do you good), and painted them with flat black high temp rustoleom (sp??). It took a while. The only real tip I have is make sure you have a GOOD T40 bit and breaker bar (I stipped out 2 bolts and had to drill them out). Getting all those bolts out to remove the parts was a PITA!! And (obviously) remove the doors first. I put 4 coats on all the hinges.
as long as they are not chrome parts its pretty simple. scuff them with 400 grit sandpaper then clean with wax and grease remover and spray them. theres plenty of painting tutorials on the web for reference.
^^ 2X....but technically no, you don't need to remove all the paint...it'll stick for a while. If you DON'T remove all the paint, make sure you scuff it up GOOD (get the clear coat off) and then clean it really well too, let it dry and get a few coats on there.
used dupli color flat black paint, didnt remove hinges because of insanely tight bolts so i jst used duct tape and newspaper. applied 3 coats, waitd 30 mins inbetween, looks amazing. next im going to do the headlight rings, hood hinges, and the hinge at the bottom corners of the windshield.
definitely do it you will love it. i sprayed my 04 tj completely in rustoleum rattle can bedliner and it looked amazing (till i wrecked it) the stuff is tough as nails and sticks like all hell as (assuming you prep properly, the years i spent in autobody payed off)
97tjconan, do you have anymore pics you can share? Preferably from straight on with a good front view of the hood? I've got clear coat failure on my hood and I am considering options. Looks good, btw.
JeepDVL45, do you have any pics you can share of your hinges that you painted black? Thanks.
I really don'y have any close ups....except a before and after for the liftgate hinge....but I'll give you what I have.
In this pic you can see the bolt I had to drill out in the windshield hinge. It was raining out when I took the pics, that why the paint looks uneven. And I didn't to the upper door hinge yet, or tighten all the bolts yet.
I had rust on my hinges too. Thats why I painted them. The spots where there was rust I sanded all the way down until there was NO rust. I didn't prime it tho....thats one thing I would redo if I could. I'm gonna take them off again in the spring and sand them ALL completely, and then hit them with self etching primer, and then I'll respray them.
Georgia, Hey how cool my mom,s name and my sister,s name is Georgia...anyway here,s the only other pic,s..
