painting aluminum

hey guys i picked up an aluminum shifter extension for my Tj but i would rather be black so it matches the rest of the shifter. I have never painted anything aluminum before. Any tips for prep or is there special paint i should try?

thanks,

zinc chromate primer for bare aluminum if you can get it. otherwise just scuff with fine sandpaper (220 up) and normal painting

I think i have some self etching primer, the whole extension is only 2 inches long so should not take that much to cover it.

thanks guys.

Yep, I would definitely scuff it up first. 220 if no primer, 80 with.
