Paint job didn't even hold up through 1 winter before rusting?

I got some rocker guards for my jeep last summer and thought i was doing a good job prepping them. I cleaned them with purple power, rinsed thoroughly, sanded them, then rinsed again. I used self-etching primer andused Krylon fusion olive green spray paint on top of the primer.

We have only seen 4 or 5 uses of road salt here over the winter, but the rockers are already showing some rust in several spots. I really laid the primer and paint to these things, so I'm surprised that they are rusting already.

Is there anything else I should have done that wouldn't cost too much and could've made the paint job last at least another couple of years before rusting?

It might be rusting from the inside out.

Self-etching primer (like Bulldog) is for adhesion, it's not a anti-corrosion product. Krylon is good for about a year, that's it. Krylon is $2.25 at Walmart, don't expect too much.

Maybe there was still some residue left from that Purple Power cleaner… thus a good bond wasn’t made with the primer. I would have hit them with acetone as the final cleaning step. Then sprayed them with primer.

You can also try an epoxy primer...

Fusion is designed for plastics, not for metal. Self etching primer is not a sealer, and I suspect Fusion is also not a sealer since plastic won't rust there's really no need for it to be a sealing agent.

An epoxy primer is a sealer.

Being a sealer means it won't let moisture pass. Ever see somebody run around with a primered panel that surface rusted within a year or two? The non-sealed primer allowed moisture to penetrate.
