paint and body on my 1955 cj5

im new to the forum and also to jeepin but here recently i got the chance to save a 1955 cj5 from a barn out in new mexico after a major tune up it runs like a champ but now she she needs a whole lot of tlc on the body and paint area. ive never done paint or body work but im willing to learn so if at any time you think im doin something wrong while in the process please let me know i wont be offended. so firt off i want to extend thanks to laybackman for the encouragement to start the paint and body after reading his thread im planning on doin a rolled on paint job and a whole lot of bondo work i will have some pics up pretty quick but cant seam to figure out how from the comp but i can from my phone i think (23 and cant work a computer lol)

so for the big hole my plan is to cut a peice of styro foam that fits in the hole then lay some sort of chicken wire over that then bondo and sand and repeat until smooth if anyone has any other idea please let me know o and i know that the jeep is quite ruff so please no hating on her its not her fault

Hi fiddy5cj5! So the process has begun! I'm am no specialist when it comes to body work but large bulky patches usually do not hold up well over time. They might crack or pop out completely unless done properly. The styrofoam can hold moisture also IIRC.


They now have adhesives in a caulking tube. I think they are two part adhesives that you can use to apply body patches or even whole body panels that are super strong! They are used in the manufacture of new vehicles. Easier to use and will actually save you time and money.

Pics show to coats of primer and one of paint before I lightly sanded with a 1500 university I got 3 more coats and sanding in between

Essentially no. I used a green scuff pad like the one used in the kitchen to scrub pots and pans to 'wipe' off any 'dusticles' that might have ended up in the paint which did occur on the hood only. Overhead where the JY was sitting is an overhead rack I use to hold my ladders etc. That also holds a little bit of dust....

Even if you sand in betweeen coats we are talking a hit and miss job not a full scrub down type of sanding. Paint only needs micro scratchesd to bond. Most paints will stick to itself real easy if the undercoat is clean. Keep your hands off of the paint! I wore latex gloves so I would not touch the paint at all with my greasy paws.

When I did my YJ I had removed the doors because they needed a complete rebuild because of the cracking issues of the door skins since the tabs holding the inner and outer skins together failed.

I also removed the windshield and tailgate so it would be easier for me to sand, prep and paint them. I mixed four quarts of paint together and thinned it all.

Each day these parts got one full coat. The body was the same thing a coat of paint per day.

Prep time for the body was two days or so for me. I do not move too fast these days!

Taken off the tail lights etc etc etc might have been a full (for me) day.

You could completely paint eveything in four of five days depending on the amount of coats and the temps in your painting environment.
Disassembly prep and reassembly will vary from man to man and Jeep to Jeep. But once you get to painting it goes quick.

I think I spent 45 minutes tops painting the entire body to include the hood, and the same time or less for the doors, tailgate and windshield.
